Indians’ bats erupt

KEIZER, Ore. – The Spokane Indians’ bats were explosive on Sunday night.

Back-to-back home runs sparked a three-run fifth inning and the Northwest League East Division-leading Indians beat the West’s best team – the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes – 5-2.

Justin Pickett led off the fifth with a solo shot for Spokane – his fourth homer of the season – and Doug Hogan went deep to left field on the next at-bat for his sixth home run of the season.

Dennis Guinn also homered for the fourth time this year for Spokane (40-19), which has a six-game lead over Boise in the division standings. Guinn hit a one-run shot in the eighth inning.

Four Indians pitchers held the the Volcanoes (32-26) to four hits.

Johnny Monell homered off Justin Miller for Salem-Keizer in the bottom of the eighth.

Carlos Pimentel (5-2) worked the first five innings for Spokane and picked up the win, allowing two hits and one run. Corey Young pitched the ninth for his fourth save.
