High school welcomes students at barbecue
Cheney High School will present the 2008 freshman/new student barbecue on Wednesday from 5:15 to 7 p.m.
Class schedules and orientation packets will be available in the foyer of the building as students arrive.
Students and their parents will hear from Tom Gresch, the school principal, Jim Missel, the school assistant principal, and ASB President Reese Martin. They will also meet members of the administration, freshman counselors and class advisers. They’ll also learn about school activities and athletics.
Students will also have the opportunity to receive their locker assignments, get a tour of the school, pay fees, work out any scheduling issues, and get information about clubs.

Koyasuyo performs at farmers market
The Cheney Farmers Market will welcome Koyasuyo, an instrumental group from the Andes, Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The performance is part of the weekly farmers market held Fridays at First and College streets in Cheney. The market is held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Public input wanted on wildfire protection
Public officials are soliciting comments on a proposed wildfire protection plan for Spokane County.
The plan identifies fire-prone “urban interface areas” and recommends ways to deal with brush and other fuels. It also promotes public awareness of wildfire problems.
The plan is being developed with help from a consulting firm and numerous public agencies, but is under the auspices of Spokane County and the Washington Department of Natural Resources.
Copies of the plan are available at libraries throughout the county and an electronic version is available at www.spokaneprepares.org.

SNAP celebrates housing project
Spokane Neighborhood Action Programs will present a straw bale wall-building ceremony today from 10 to 11 a.m. to highlight the new Riverwalk Phase II housing complex and the Community Building at 4915 E. Upriver Drive.
The straw bale building will offer life skills classes and a computer center.
The ceremony will include County Commissioner Bonnie Mager, Rep. Timm Ormsby and Vicky Dalton, the Spokane County auditor and SNAP board president.
