Access to EVMS restricted by construction

The first day of school at East Valley Middle School on Wednesday will not go as Principal Mark Purvine planned.

Road construction expected to be completed by now is still under way, blocking the traditional access routes to the school at Wellesley Avenue and Progress Road.

“There’s a sewer project in the ’hood here,” Purvine said. “Essentially, Wellesley and Progress and other side streets are going to remain under construction for roughly two weeks. The access to our building is going to be very restricted and very changeable. Almost hourly it changes right now.”

Parents are asked to drop off and pick up their children in the gravel parking lot located east of the school between the middle school and the high school. The lot is usually used to access the sports fields. The driveway is on Wellesley just east of the construction zone.

Buses will be allowed into the construction area to drop students off until paving is under way, Purvine said. Bus routes and pickup times will not change. Letters have been sent out to parents about the problem and information is posted on the school’s Web site at www.evsd.org/evms.

Purvine expects that the problem will be short-lived. “The plan was to have the project completed prior to school start, but they ran into delays,” he said. “I’m very hopeful it will be completed by the end of the first full week of school.”
