Portland stops Chiefs
EVERETT – The Spokane Chiefs put 35 more shots on goal than Portland, but fell to the Winter Hawks 5-3 in Saturday’s second day of Everett’s preseason hockey tournament.
The Chiefs outshot Portland 21-3 in the first period and took a 1-0 lead when Mike Aviani, a fifth-round bantam pick, used assists from Justin McCrae and Mike Betz to score midway through the period.
Portland scored the game’s next two goals before an unassisted goal by the Chiefs’ Tyler Johnson knotted the game at 2 heading into the final period.
T.C. Cratsenberg, the Chiefs’ sixth-round draft selection in 2007, scored early in the third on assists from Aviani and McCrae to put the Chiefs up 3-2. But the Winter Hawks closed with rush by tagging Alex Wright, who played all 60 minutes in net for the Chiefs, with three unanswered goals.
Spokane (1-1) winds up play in the tournament today with an 11 a.m. matchup against the Tri-City Americans.
