Hillyard

Join discussion of $2.7 million project grant

Hillyard residents are invited to a workshop Monday on how to spend a $2.7 million transportation grant to enhance the sidewalks and adjacent public areas along Market Street in the historic portion of Hillyard.

The meeting is set for 6 p.m. in the assembly room of the Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook St.

Neighborhood leaders want to know what residents think should be included in the project, which is being partially funded with federal community development funds allocated to Hillyard each year.

Possibilities include special crosswalk designs, more money for trees, period lighting or improvements to Queen Avenue.

Students from Washington State University’s Interdisciplinary Design Institute have been working with the neighborhood for several years to produce design concepts for revitalization of Hillyard.

The street-side improvements were sought to supplement plans by the city to rehabilitate Market Street as part of a 2004 city voter-approved street bond, which provides money for street work, but not for sidewalks and other improvements outside the curbs. In addition, water services to properties along the route are being upgraded to meet newer building codes and allow for future redevelopment in older buildings.
