Church of Christ hosts Plum festival

Nina Culver

December always brings a flurry of activity to Valley churches, and the Veradale United Church of Christ is no exception. Three different events are on the schedule for this week, two of them continuing long traditions.

During the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday, the Rev. Linda Crowe will present her annual “Spokane Valley Christmas Story.” Every year she writes a contemporary Christmas story to be shared during worship.

Also on Sunday the church will host its 33rd annual Plum Pudding Festival. The holiday tradition includes poems, stories and plum puddings. A holiday program is also part of the afternoon, which will last from 3 to 5 p.m.

This week the church also begins offering a midweek meditation and fellowship time from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday. The events will continue every week during December. The church sanctuary will be open for meditation and prayer and there will be refreshments available in the fellowship hall.

The church is at 611 N. Progress Road. Call 926-7173 for more information.

Remembering Pearl Harbor

In recognition of Pearl Harbor Day, which is on Sunday, East Valley Presbyterian Church will host a reading of “Radioman: An Eyewitness Account of Pearl Harbor and World War II in the Pacific” at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Author Carol Edgemon Hipperson will answer questions about the book and do a signing. The man who is the subject of “Radioman” and other Pearl Harbor survivors will be in attendance. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. The church is at 5305 N. Harvard Road.

Christmas caroling

Start practicing your Christmas carols for the annual Christmas caroling neighborhood tour put on by Opportunity Presbyterian Church.

Those interested in spreading some holiday cheer to local residents are asked to gather at the church, 202 N. Pines Road, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday for some cookies and hot chocolate before heading out. All singers are welcome. Those who can play an instrument may bring it. The tour will end at 4 p.m.

Christmas drama

New Life Assembly of God Church will present several performances of “Scrooge” this week. The performances based on Charles Dickens’ work will begin at 7 p.m. Friday and next Saturday, and at 10 a.m. Dec. 14. Admission is a can of food for the Valley Food Bank.

‘Messiah’ performance

The East Stake Choir of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will perform Handel’s “Messiah” in concert at 7 p.m. on Dec. 14. The audience will be invited to sing along during certain sections of the holiday classic. Refreshments will be served and admission is free. The church is at 13608 E. 40th Ave.
