Whits bounce back in style

Nate Montgomery notched a double-double and Calvin Jurich just missed a triple-double as the Whitworth Pirates rebounded from their first loss of the season and pummeled the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs 90-58 in the third-place game of the Lee Fulmer Classic on Saturday in Redlands, Calif.

Montgomery had game highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Jurich piled up 22 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. David Riley added 13 points for the Pirates (6-1), who shot 52 percent (31 of 60) from the floor for the game.

Scotty Buck topped Santa Cruz (3-7) with 15 points.

The Banana Slugs shot just 36 percent (19 of 53) from the floor.

Whitworth had a 47-26 advantage on the boards.

The Pirates’ next two games are exhibitions.

North Idaho 99, Green River 67: Melvin Jones hit four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 24 points and added four assists and four steals to spark the Cardinals (11-0) to a non-conference victory over the Gators (3-3) in Auburn, Wash.

Shawn Henderson added 23 points and four steals and Renado Parker chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds for the Cardinals, who shot 53 percent from the floor (38 of 72).

Bryan Currie topped the Gators with 17 points.
