Parenting fight leads to stabbings, arrest
Police arrested a 28-year-old Spokane Valley woman Sunday after she stabbed two other women during a heated discussion about her fitness to be a mother, said spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan.
Shelly Rae Jones was booked into the Spokane County Jail about 4:30 a.m. Sunday on two counts of second-degree Assault.
Officers were called to an apartment in the 700 block of North Argonne by a female resident. They arrived to find Jones screaming that she had stabbed the 37-year-old resident and another woman.
Officer Mark Brownell detained her. Further investigation revealed that Jones and her first victim, a 31-year-old female visitor, were arguing in the home’s kitchen about Jones’ parenting skills. Jones suddenly grabbed a metal can opener and allegedly began stabbing the visitor in the head, Reagan said.
The female resident heard the assault and ran into the kitchen to see Jones stabbing the other woman. When she tried to stop the assault, Jones turned on the resident and began stabbing her in the shoulder and chest.
Although both victims suffered deep punctures and cuts, none of the wounds was considered life-threatening.
Brownell’s interviews with the suspect revealed that alcohol and cocaine played a role in the argument and assaults, Reagan said.
The suspect’s three children were sleeping in the apartment at the time of the fracas. They were turned over to their father, who resides in Plummer, Idaho.
