Eagles fail to keep pace with Mustangs

Kristina Santiago hit 12 of her 16 free-throw attempts and finished with a game-high 20 points to propel the Cal Poly Mustangs to a 71-62 victory over the Eastern Washington Eagles in non-conference women’s basketball Saturday in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Julie Piper, Brianne Ryan and reserve Tatjana Sparavalo scored 10 points apiece to lead the Eagles (4-7). Piper and Santiago tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds.

Lisa McBride added 14 points for Cal Poly (7-4).

The Mustangs hit 25 of 34 free throws, while Eastern connected on 14 of 17. EWU shot 32 percent (21 of 66) from the floor, while Cal Poly hit 48 percent (21 of 44).

Montana State 64, Idaho 52: Jenny Heringer hit four 3-pointers on her way to 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Bobcats (5-5) to a non-conference victory over the Vandals (3-7) in Bozeman.

Derisa Taleni had a double-double – 16 points, 10 rebounds – to pace Idaho. Rachele Kloke scored a game-high 18 for the Vandals, who shot just 11 percent (3 for 27) from 3-point range. Idaho shot just 29 percent from the floor, connecting on 19 of 66 shots.

Nubia Garcia and Sarah Strand tossed in 10 points apiece for Montana State. The Bobcats shot 45 percent (26 of 58) from the floor and 35 percent (7 of 20) from long distance.

Men

Brad Johnson came off the bench to score 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor to help the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (7-3) rally for a 95-90 victory over the Spokane Generals in non-conference play at Spokane Falls Community College.

Johnson hit a pair of 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds. The Sasquatch also received double-figure scoring from Derek Gianukakis (14), Kevin Cameron (13), Griffon Jones (13) and Brendan Ingebritsen (12). Damal Neil topped CCS with seven rebounds. Cameron also handed out nine assists.

Stu Fried hit seven 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 28 points for the Generals. Jared Tikker and Adam Heib each scored 14, while Bobby Gosney tallied 11 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds.
