Christmas a remembering time

Dorothy Hubbard Special to The Spokesman-Review

May you remember, as I do, a long ago Christmas time – people were kind and it was a happy time.

It’s the time of the year stories are told and read and reread with cherished memories.

The old house is filled with scents from the wood stove burning and the smell of baking bread and goodies for the holidays.

Grandpa and the kids went after the Christmas tree. We all stood around waiting for the big guy to put the tree in the big iron wheel from an old tractor.

The real spirit of Christmas is contentment, friendship and the joy of the family together. Christmas in the days of my youth was less hurried. The gifts were mostly hand-made – doll clothes, scarves, pot holders, mittens and maybe a coat. They meant much more. And then there was still work to do – fill the wood box and bring the squash, potatoes, apples and carrots to the store room.

These were pleasant memories indeed. Christmas day we gathered in the kitchen and living room. There were no lights on the tree. We ate candy canes and popcorn and Grandpa would tell us stories about his Christmases which were long before ours.

As you grow older, being remembered by your loved ones is the best gift you’ll ever get.

Christmas is a remembering time, and I will always remember all those days of happiness.

I wish you all the most happy time.
