Four 4A teams in battle

The Spokesman-Review

A taut four-team race – as expected given the closeness of the Greater Spokane League dual match season – is brewing after a day of District 8 4A wrestling at Mead.

Mead leads with 117 points, followed by Central Valley with 115.5, University with 115 and Ferris with 105.5.

There were only a handful of upsets and they were minor with none of the top two seeds in any weight class losing.

Ten returning state placers all advanced to this morning’s semis that begin at 10 a.m.

One notable change, however, is at 130 pounds where U-Hi state finalist Brian Owen bumped up after failing to make weight at 125.

The league co-champion CV Bears have 12 semifinalists, U-Hi and Mead have 11 each and Ferris has 10.

3A: East Valley advanced 11 wrestlers to the semifinals and scored 132.5 points on the first day of the 3A subregional in Kennewick. Included are returning state placers Clete Hanson at 189 pounds and Dakota Lawson at 171.

North Central advanced seven wrestlers to the semifinals and Mt. Spokane has two still alive for individual titles.

2A: Riverside has grabbed the first-day lead with 158.5 points at the District 7 meet at West Valley.

The Rams lead Deer Park, which has scored 148 points. Clarkston is third with 107.5.

Riverside and Deer Park each have 11 semifinalists and every school has at least two.

Seven of the eight schools in the Great Northern League have five or more.
