Cougars defeat Creighton

Run-scoring singles by John Desmarais and Paul Gran in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Washington State Cougars a 5-4 non-conference college baseball victory over the Creighton Bluejays on Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

The Cougars won 2 of 3 in the season-opening weekend series.

Washington State overcame a 2-0 deficit with a three-run third inning. Second baseman Michael Weber homered with one out to tie the game and Gran singled with two outs to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead.

The Bluejays regained the lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before the Cougars won it with their two-run sixth.

Michael Ratigan pitched 12/3 innings in relief to earn the victory.

•Tyrone Hambly went 4 for 6 and drove in five runs to lead the Oklahoma State Cowboys to a doubleheader and series sweep of the Gonzaga Bulldogs at Stillwater, Okla.

Matt Gardner won his 10th consecutive decision dating back to 2006 in Oklahoma State’s 3-1 victory in the opener.

In the nightcap, the Cowboys (4-0) claimed a 10-3 victory, scoring eight runs in the third inning after falling behind when Gonzaga (0-4) plated three runs in the top of the first.

Ryan Wiegan had two hits in the doubleheader – both in the second game – to lead Gonzaga.
