Stanford sweeps California
Brook Lopez left the court at halftime with a sense of satisfaction, and it certainly wasn’t because Stanford’s best big man had scored only two points.
Lopez had just helped to hold California star Ryan Anderson to two fewer points than Lopez managed in that opening half – and after 20 more minutes of impressive team defense, everybody in Cardinal uniforms felt good about themselves.
Anthony Goods scored 20 points and Lopez added 15 points and nine rebounds in No. 9 Stanford’s 79-69 victory over the Golden Bears on Sunday night in Stanford, Calif., keeping the Cardinal in the race for the Pac-10 title with their ninth win in 10 games.
Robin Lopez and Mitch Johnson had 11 points apiece for the Cardinal (22-4, 11-3), who improved to 14-1 at Maples Pavilion.
Stanford also swept the season series from its cross-Bay rival, following an 82-77 win in Berkeley last month.
Anderson – the Pac-10’s leading scorer – finished with 15 points after going scoreless in the first half. He was 2 for 13 from the field and grabbed 11 rebounds against Stanford. He made all 10 of his free throws, but couldn’t hit two open 3-pointers that would have given Cal (15-10, 6-8) its first lead since the opening minutes.
(3) North Carolina 89, Wake Forest 73: Tyler Hansbrough had 29 points to help keep the Tar Heels (26-2, 11-2) at the top of the Atlantic Coast Conference standings with a win over the Demon Deacons (16-9, 6-6) in Chapel Hill, N.C.
(10) Xavier 57, Dayton 51: Josh Duncan scored 14 points, and Drew Lavender made four free throws in the final 35 seconds as the Musketeers (24-4, 12-1 Atlantic 10) beat the Flyers (17-9, 5-8) in Dayton, Ohio.
(11) Wisconsin 58, Ohio St. 53: Jason Bohannon came off the bench to score 16 points and the Badgers (23-4, 13-2 Big Ten) relied on their stout defense to hold off the Buckeyes (17-10, 8-6) in Columbus, Ohio.
(18) Louisville 75, Pittsburgh 73: David Padgett made three of four free throws in the final 32.1 seconds and the Cardinals (22-6, 12-3 Big East) held on to beat the Panthers (19-8, 7-7) in Pittsburgh.
(21) Notre Dame 94, Syracuse 87: Kyle McAlarney made a school-record nine 3-pointers to finish with 30 points and the Irish (21-5, 11-3 Big East) beat the Orange (17-11, 7-8) in South Bend, Ind.
Dyson returns for UConn
Jerome Dyson has been reinstated to the Connecticut basketball team after missing nine games while suspended for failing a drug test.
The sophomore guard will be eligible to play Tuesday at Rutgers.
Dyson had averaged over 14 points a game before his suspension, which began after he and sophomore guard Doug Wiggins were cited by campus police for possession of alcohol by a minor. Wiggins passed a drug test and served a two-game suspension.
