Brown back with Shock

Anthony Brown will be back with the Spokane Shock this season.

The wide receiver was released by the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League in the final cuts.

Brown joined the Shock midway through the 2007 season and had 22 catches, including three for touchdowns. He also made nine tackles as a defensive end.

The Shock also announced the retirement of defensive lineman Jerome Stevens, a two-year veteran.

The Shock will play an exhibition game in Yakima on March 20 and open the regular season at Green Bay on March 30. The home opener is April 5 against Stockton.

Gonzaga returns to AP poll at 24

Gonzaga is back in the Associated Press men’s poll after a nine-week absence.

The Zags are ranked 24th, one spot ahead of West Coast Conference nemesis Saint Mary’s. The teams play Saturday at McCarthey Athletic Center with first place in the WCC at stake.

Washington State fell from No. 17 to No. 22 after losing to Arizona on Saturday in Pullman. The Cougars are also No. 22 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll. Gonzaga is unranked in that poll.

Tennessee is the new No. 1 in both polls on the strength of its victory over previously unbeaten and No. 1 Memphis.

Women’s rowing

Redman fourth at World Indoors

Lewis and Clark graduate (2004) Jamie Redman placed fourth in the Indoor Rowing World Championships at Boston University last Saturday.

Tess Gerrand, a teammate of Redman’s at Yale, won both the collegiate and open divisions of the C.R.A.S.H.-B World Indoor Rowing Championships. It is an event whose scoring is based solely on 2,000-meter rowing-machine times.

Redman, a 2007 first-team All-American and a member of Yale’s national championship heavyweight eight last year, finished second in the collegiate division. She learned how to row with Spokane River Rowing Association. She competed Saturday in her Spokane River Rowing unisuit. “It had good mojo,” she wrote in an e-mail.

To comply with NCAA regulations, Gerrand and Redman rowed as unaffiliated.
