Cal upends Mayo, USC

Eric Vierneisel made consecutive 3-pointers to break open a one-point game midway through the second half and California (10-2, 1-0) spoiled O.J. Mayo’s Pac-10 debut by beating No. 22 Southern California (9-4, 0-1) 92-82 on Thursday night in Berkeley, Calif.

Patrick Christopher led the way for Cal with 24 points. Jerome Randle added 16 and Vierneisel had a career-high 15.

Mayo scored a game-high 34 points but missed seven of 10 3-pointers for USC.

(5) UCLA 76, (24) Stanford 67: At Stanford, Calif., Josh Shipp scored 21 points to lead the Bruins (13-1, 1-0) over the Cardinal (11-2, 0-1).

(21) Arizona 76, Oregon State 63: At Tucson, Ariz., Jordan Hill had 20 points and 14 rebounds and the Wildcats (10-3, 1-0) pulled away to beat the Beavers (6-7, 0-1) in the teams’ Pac-10 opener.

Arizona State 62, Oregon 54: At Tempe, Ariz., James Harden scored 20 points, Jeff Pendergraph added 17 and Derek Glasser scored seven clutch points in the final three minutes as the Sun Devils (11-2, 1-0) rallied to beat the Ducks (9-4, 0-1).

Portland State 83, Sacramento State 58: At Portland, Ore., Deonte Huff scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Vikings (8-7, 1-1) to a win over the Hornets (2-10, 0-2).

Idaho State 76, Northern Colorado 65: At Pocatello, Logan Kinghorn and Amorrow Morgan each scored 13 points to lead the Bengals (4-10, 1-0) past the Bears (6-8, 1-2).

Utah State 86, Hawaii 80: At Logan, Utah, Tai Wesley scored a career-high 27 points and Jaycee Carroll added 26 as the Aggies (11-5, 1-0) topped the Warriors (4-9, 0-1). Fifteen of Wesley’s points came in the second half for Utah State.

Fresno State 61, Louisiana Tech 44: At Ruston, La., Eddie Miller scored a game-high 17 points and Kevin Bell dropped in 13 more as the Bulldogs handily defeated the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
