Spokane Humane Society is right name
I much enjoyed your article in today’s (Jan. 3) paper. As a former member of the board of directors and board president of the Spokane Humane Society I am always pleased by publicity on the pet adoptions and the kinds of wonderful animals available at SHS, SCRAPS and Spokanimal.
I do have one “bone to pick” with you, however. You refer to SHS as the Humane Society of Spokane. That is not the correct name. I have seen the incorrect term used several times recently in the paper so I am taking this opportunity to correct the record.
The Spokane Humane Society and SPCA was incorporated by that name in the state of Washington in 1897. It has always been called the Spokane Humane Society. It has no affiliation with the Humane Society of the U.S., which is an entirely different organization which does not carry out shelter programs.
In fact, humane society is kind of a generic term. Spokanimal refers to itself as the Humane Society of the Northwest or NW Humane Society (I forget which). Anyway, I would hope in future your paper uses the correct, Spokane Humane Society name for that organization.

Local articles are what we need
The Spokesman-Review is getting skimpier, but it’s OK by me as long as Your Voice keeps printing articles like the Jan. 3 “SCRAPS to enforce new ordinance,” and “Assessments match dogs with owners of similar lifestyle,” and “Shelter pets find new homes.” The accompanying picture of the SCRAPS kittens was priceless, too.
We can get national news from CNN, Fox, or USA Today. We need more of these local articles that keep us informed and inspired about how we can help solve local problems. Keep up the good work!

Nice to read community news
Cindy Hval’s feature on “shiny red things” caught my attention since she mentioned her coveting my new red crock pot. I e-mailed Cindy and told her I thought she needed a dryer to go with her new Tango Red washing machine. She replied that she did get one.
Stefanie Pettit’s article on grief reminded me of a friend I have lunch with once a month. Imagine my surprise when that friend wrote me of her being mentioned in the article. Our Fab Four group meets at the Davenport during the Christmas season and will meet at my home this month for a bowl of soup and conversation. We laugh and cry, vent our problems and know that our words will be safely treasured. Friendship is a wonderful gift.
Thanks for the community news. It is much appreciated.
