Bruins down Huskies

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Russell Westbrook scored 18 points, UCLA shot better than 52 percent from the field and the fifth-ranked Bruins defeated Washington 69-55 on Thursday night in Los Angeles.

UCLA (15-1, 3-0 Pac-10) got 17 points from Luc Richard Mbah a Moute in winning its eighth straight.

Jon Brockman had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Huskies (9-6, 0-2), who lost to a ranked opponent for the fifth time this season. They shot 42 percent from the field in falling to 3-42 at Pauley Pavilion since it opened in 1965.

UCLA point guard Darren Collison left the game with 18:03 to play, clutching his left hip and grimacing. He did not return and was diagnosed with a hip contusion. The junior guard had suffered from food poisoning earlier in the week.

Brockman gave up 3 inches and 16 pounds to Kevin Love, the 6-foot-10, 271-pound UCLA freshman who finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. The two big men pushed and shoved in the paint in the first half, when they were almost even in scoring and rebounding.

The game was tied four times in the first 10 minutes before UCLA broke it open with a 27-11 run that ended the half with the Bruins ahead 41-23. The spurt began with nine consecutive points, and Mbah a Moute scored seven in a row in one stretch.

The Bruins shot 52 percent in the half and made 12 of 13 free throws.

(23) Stanford 66, Oregon St. 46: At Corvallis, Ore., Lawrence Hill had 13 points and Brook Lopez had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead the Cardinal past the Beavers.

Anthony Goods added 12 points for Stanford (13-2, 2-1), which has beaten Oregon State in 16 of the last 17 meetings.

Freshman Omari Johnson had 11 points and eight rebounds but was just 4 of 14 from the field for the Beavers (6-9, 0-3), who had a season-low point total and shot 30.4 percent. C.J. Giles and Seth Tarver were Oregon State’s next leading scorers with seven points each.

The loss was the fifth straight for the Beavers.

Oregon 79, California 70: At Eugene, Ore., Malik Hairston and Bryce Taylor scored 20 points apiece and the Ducks held off the Bears.

Maarty Leunen added 18 points and 11 rebounds for his conference-leading 10th double-double of the season. The Ducks (11-4, 2-1) have won back-to-back games for the first time since early December.

Ryan Anderson, the Pac-10’s leading scorer, scored 22 points for the Bears (10-4, 1-2), who were playing their first road game since Dec. 9.
