Dog House Drive gears up

Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service is asking for help from the animal-loving community with the annual Dog House Drive.

Each year, SCRAPS accepts donated new or used (in good repair) doghouses which it then makes available to pet owners in need.

“Each year at this time, when the mercury starts to drop, SCRAPS receives countless calls to check on the condition of a dog left in his backyard without shelter,” said SCRAPS director Nancy Hill. “We answer each check-on condition call we receive. Sometimes a dog is in a dire situation.”

Every year there are owners who can’t afford to buy doghouses for their pets. Officers then send these owners to SCRAPS to pick up a doghouse.

People who have doghouses to donate are asked to bring them to SCRAPS shelter at 2521 N. Flora Road. Pet owners in need of dog houses should call 477-2532.

Registration for Central Valley Little League spring baseball begins Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Evergreen Middle School.

Other sites and dates for Valley registration, all 6 to 8 p.m. unless otherwise noted, are: Jan. 28, Chester Elementary; Feb. 4, McDonald Elementary; Feb. 13, Pasadena Elementary; Feb. 19 Centennial Middle School; Feb. 25, Summit School; Feb. 27, Bowdish Middle School; March 1, University High School, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; March 3, Broadway Elementary; March 15, West Valley High School, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Gothmann earns NLC achievement

Spokane Valley Councilmember Bill Gothmann has achieved a bronze-level Certificate of Achievement in Leadership from the National League of Cities.

Gothmann, who has served as a member of the Spokane Valley City Council since 2006, earned the certification by completing a series of seminars in municipal leadership. The National League of Cities offers those seminars to enhance local elected officials’ skills in effective governance, promotion and management of change and effective communications.
