Cat neutering event Saturday

Area pet shelters are trying to curb Spokane’s cat population this spring by offering a one-day, mass cat neutering event Saturday.

Pet Savers, the Spokane Humane Society and SpokAnimal CARE will offer routine neutering for male cats for $15.

With spring around the corner, the shelters are bracing for an influx of homeless kittens during April and May. By neutering as many males as possible, there may be fewer un-neutered cats on the prowl.

The shelters also will take donations to help fund the event.

To get your male cat neutered, call one of the participating shelters for an appointment.

The neutering will be done at Pet Savers, 7525 E. Trent Ave., Spokane Valley, 924-7826, the Spokane Humane Society, 6607 N. Havana, 467-5235, ext. 19 (Monday through Thursday), and at SpokAnimal, 710 N. Napa, 534-8133.

LC student named Outstanding Teen

McKenzi Novell of Lewis and Clark High School has been selected as Miss Spokane’s Outstanding Teen 2008 in a ceremony held Jan. 18.

She is an honor student, a member and choreographer of the school’s drill team and a member of the LC golf team. She plans to use her year of service as Miss Spokane’s Outstanding Teen to promote teen involvement in after-school tutoring programs at the elementary school level. Novell is a tutor at Hutton Elementary.

She received a $500 scholarship, expenses to participate in the state competition, the Spirit of Spokane Community Service Award, the Miss Photogenic Award and the Modeling Award for a grand total of $700 in scholarships.

First runner-up was Chloe Maier of Freeman High School, and second runner-up was Madison Martin also of Lewis and Clark High School.

Chase Awards deadline Friday

Friday is the deadline to submit nominations for the Chase Youth Awards, which will be held March 27.

Categories to nominate youths in kindergarten through 12th grade, or adults 18 or older no longer enrolled in high school include community involvement, courage, creativity, diversity, leadership, personal achievement and the “Jim Chase Asset Builder” adult award.
