Dear Diane: Mother’s conduct appalling

Diane Verhoeven King Features Syndicate

Dear Diane: My son is in wrestling, and at every meet, one of the other mothers, “Helga,” makes a scene with me. She’s always trying to get into shouting matches with me or trying to start a fight. Both our sons are in the same weight class and compete against each other frequently. I’ve tried walking off, but she just follows me. I want to go and support my son, but I don’t want to have to put up with this. What do I do?

— Fed Up in Memphis

Dear Memphis: Many school districts and public youth sports organizations have adopted rules of conduct for parents because of moms (and dads) like Helga, who think they can intimidate other parents and/or their kids.

In my opinion, childish and abrasive behavior like Helga’s is unforgivable. Young people should learn how to win — and lose — with grace and class, not like a spoiled jerk. Speak with your son’s coach or the school principal. If a policy isn’t yet in place to control rowdy parent behavior, strongly suggest that there should be.
