Rogers brothers win big
Jordan Rogers, 14, and Chandler Rogers, 12, won national championships at the Asics Kids Freestyle and Greco Roman National Wrestling Championships in Orem, Utah July 2-6.
Jordan Rogers wrestled to national championships in both freestyle and Greco Roman disciplines, and was named to the All-American Team in both styles. Chandler Rogers won a national championship in Greco Roman, placed third in freestyle and was also All-American in both styles.
Both Rogers brothers are members of the Big Cat Wrestling Club which practices at Mead High School. Jordan has claimed nine national championships, has been named to the Cliff Keen World of Wrestling All-Star Team three times and was recently named to the All-Tournament Greco and Freestyle Team at the Schoolboy National Duals held in Indianapolis, Ind., June 22-26 after posting an undefeated record in both styles (16-0).
Chandler Rogers has claimed two national championships and has been a national runner-up four times.
Anderson wins national title
Motocross racer Wyatt Anderson of Colbert took first in his class at the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Black Cat Gold Dirt Track Grand Championship in DuQuion, Ill., June 30-July 5.
Anderson, 12, will be a seventh grader this fall at Mountainside Middle School in Mead. He won the overall championship in the 85cc modified class by scoring a total of 69 points in four races, which included two half-mile circuits and two “tourist trophy” courses.
Anderson started motocross racing when he was four years old. He is sponsored by B&B Powersports of Spokane. Earlier this year he won the AMA Regional National Championship in Lodi, Calif., by winning the 85cc DTX class and finishing second in the 85cc modified class. His next competition is the Gene Romero Series in Cottage Grove, Ore., on Aug. 22 and Lebanon, Ore., on Aug. 23.
Lee sixth at junior nationals
Nicholas Lee, 15, of Spokane competed at the USA Badminton Junior Nationals in Marblehead, Mass., June 27-July 2.
Lee, a sophomore at Ferris this fall, played in the under-17 bracket. He won his first three singles rounds, then lost in the quarterfinal. He later won to advance to the 5/6 playoffs, finishing sixth. He finished sixth in mixed doubles playing with Amy Jim of Seattle and eighth in boys doubles playing with Cleon Yau from San Francisco.
Lee qualified for the junior nationals by winning the USA Badminton Washington state singles title and doubles titles with the same partners.
Blazers third at End of Trail
The Northwest Blazers finished third in the Platinum bracket at the Oregon End-of-the-Trail basketball tournament July 6-9 in Oregon City, Ore.
Considered the most prestigious high school girls summer basketball tournament west of the Mississippi, this year’s field included 208 teams on the court and about 300 coaches from colleges on the west coast in the stands.
The Northwest Blazers are a club team made up of girls from Big Sky Hoops in Missoula, Mont., and the Spokane Blazers.
Jazmine Redmon of Mead was named to the national division 70-player all-tournament team. Kristina Puthoff of Mead, who played for the gold bracket consolation winner Spokane Sandpipers, also made the all-tournament team.
The Spokane Stars Blue team placed sixth in the diamond bracket and a pair of Moses Lake players, Carly Noyes and Jordan Loera, made the all-tournament team as well.
•The Spokane Stars Blue team finished second in the MidSummer Nights Madness National Championships in Seattle July 10-13, losing to Idaho Flash Liberty 55-48 in the final. The North Idaho Elite reached the quarterfinals in the 30-team bracket. Also in that bracket was Tiger Basketball No. 1 (Lewis and Clark) which lost to the Stars Blue in the first round 54-49, and the Spokane Stars Red which won its first game before losing to the Idaho Flash Liberty.
In the 28-team National Elite Friendship bracket, the Spokane Sandpipers made it to the quarterfinals. The All-Star Friendship bracket was won by the North Idaho All-Stars.
Robb set for international event
Tanner Robb of Liberty Lake will compete in this year’s Optimist International Junior Golf Championships July 31-Aug. 3 at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Robb will compete in the boys 16-18 age division.
The tournament showcases some of the most talented young players in the world, with 625 players representing 40 states, six Canadian provinces and 30 other nations.
Softball tourney slated
Spokane will host a competition yielding two berths to the 2009 18U Hall of Fame Tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The Northwest Region #15 Amateur Softball Association of America girls 18 and under ”A” fastpitch regional will be held July 18-20 at Franklin Park.
