Bandits’ U-Hi players earn coach’s praise

Mike Vlahovich

Spokane Valley baseball players are in the midst of tournaments to determine state qualifying American Legion teams.

The Bandits – including University players Michael Holmes, Danny Jordan, Billy Moon, Tyler Olson and Jacob Olsufka – are hosting a four-team weekend Senior Legion regional at Shadle Park that qualifies two teams to state.

Last year the Bandits finished fourth in the state tournament. This year’s route to state, including teams from Wenatchee, Vancouver and Centralia, is a bit more difficult.

Jordan, said coach Steve Hertz, has been an offensive catalyst as well as one of the team’s pitchers.

“He bats leadoff and is one of the finest competitors I’ve been around,” said the former Gonzaga University head coach.

Olson, Hertz continued, has been another pitching, first base and offensive key.

“He has been outstanding (on the mound) from the get-go,” said Hertz. “His first outing was a one-hitter. And he’s a four-hole power guy. Everyone was thinking of him as a pitcher (at GU next year). Now they’re thinking of him as a two-way guy.”

Moon, batting third, “dedicated the summer learning how to pull the ball with authority,” said Hertz. He is a centerfield stalwart and has recently returned to pitching after a layoff the first part of the season.

Olsufka and Holmes have been steady at shortstop and second base and hit well, he said.

The Bandits were regular season AAA league champions and automatically seeded into the regional. They opened play Friday night and double-elimination qualifying resumes today at 4:30 p.m.

•Meanwhile, both Central Valley and University are playing for the South Division championship in a best-of-three Junior AA Legion series and an automatic berth to state in Yakima and Kennewick.

University won the regular season of the division then swept Shadle Park 6-5 and 6-1 in the first round of playoffs. Tony Tabish doubled and tripled in game one and Justin Liu had five hits in the doubleheader, three in game two to back Jon Rapose’s four-hitter.

Central Valley swept division runnerup Lewis and Clark 5-4 and 5-3 to advance. David Borgman had four hits, Scott Simon three and Cory Mack and Dane Berg each doubled twice.

Four teams are seeking three state berths. Gonzaga Prep and Mt. Spokane from the North Division are the other teams involved.

University and CV A Legion teams are also playing off with state the goal.
