Bolt wins 200 at Beijing tuneup

Easing up and still easily winning, Usain Bolt is looking like he’s right where he wants to be going into the Beijing Olympics.

The 100-meter world record holder from Jamaica got off to a fast start in the 200 on Saturday at the London Grand Prix and won in 19.76 seconds.

“I came out here with a plan and I did execute that well,” Bolt said. “My coach, no doubt, will tell me what I did wrong. I just came here to work on my 200 and I did just that today.”

Wallace Spearmon of the United States was second in 20.27 and Paul Hession of Ireland was third in 20.37 at Crystal Palace.

Bolt set the 100 world record of 9.72 seconds in May, breaking the 9.74 mark of Jamaican teammate Asafa Powell.

In the women’s 100, world champion Veronica Campbell-Brown caught Jamaican teammate Shelly-Ann Fraser toward the end of the race and held her off to win in 10.87.

World champion Kerron Clement of the United States appeared to effortlessly circle the track in the 400 hurdles, easily winning in 48.36.

World indoor champion Lolo Jones of the U.S. came from behind to win the women’s 100 hurdles in 12.58, and Melanie Walker of Jamaica won the 400 hurdles in 54.22.

Kelly Sotherton won the four-event challenge with 3,964 points after finishing second in the 200 in 23.63.

World champion Brad Walker, a University High School and University of Washington graduate, finished fourth in the pole vault. He cleared 18-9 1/4 , but skipped the next three heights before failing to get over 19-5 1/4 , with one attempt and 19-7 with his next two.

Tennis

Nadal reaches final of Rogers Cup

Spain’s Rafael Nadal beat Andy Murray of Britain 7-6 (2), 6-3 to reach the final of the Rogers Cup in Toronto, and put himself in line for his seventh title of the year.

He’ll face Nicolas Kiefer, who reached the championship with a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Gilles Simon.

Nadal won the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year.

•Flavia Pennetta won the biggest semifinal of her career at the East West Bank Classic in Carson, Calif., defeating wild-card Bethanie Mattek 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

The 26-year-old Italian will face either top-seeded Jelena Jankovic or No. 4 Dinara Safina in today’s final. Jankovic can take over the No. 1 world ranking if she wins the tournament.

•Sara Errani beat third-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 6-4, 6-4 in the Slovenia Open semifinals at Portoroz, Slovenie, to reach her second straight tournament final. She will face Medina Garrigues for the title.

Hockey

Wild reach deal with Bouchard

After trying to trade him earlier this summer, the Minnesota Wild avoided a salary arbitration hearing with Pierre-Marc Bouchard by re-signing the right wing to a five-year, $20.4 million contract.

Bouchard’s 221 points over five seasons rank second on the club’s all-time list behind Marian Gaborik.

•The Boston Bruins have bought out the final year of veteran right-winger Glen Murray’s contract.

The 35-year-old Murray, a 16-year veteran, has scored 337 goals with 314 assists in 1,009 regular season games.

U.S. men upset Brazil in volleyball

The United States upset five-time defending champion Brazil 25-23, 25-22, 27-25 at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, to reach a World League volleyball final against Serbia.

Serbia advanced by beating Russia 25-19, 25-19, 25-23.

The last time Brazil failed to win the World League title was in 2002.

•The Astana cycling team, banned from this year’s Tour de France, has fired Russian cyclist Vladimir Gusev because of irregular data that showed up in internal doping tests.

•Regena Jackson, a leading scorer on the Louisiana-Monroe women’s basketball team last season, was arrested for firing a gun from an apartment balcony in Monroe, La., and was expelled from school.

•Commentator scored a dominant, front-running victory in the $750,000 Whitney Handicap on Saturday at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
