Kitsap strikes first to beat Spokane

Kitsap first baseman Bucky Aona was 3 for 5 with four RBIs to help the BlueJackets defeat the Spokane RiverHawks 8-4 in a West Coast Collegiate Baseball League game at Avista Stadium Monday night.

Kitsap (18-18) took the lead early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Spokane (16-17) managed to tie the score at 3 with a three-run fifth inning, including a two-run double by Beau Brett.

The BlueJackets regained the lead for good in the eighth inning.

Aaron Guinn earned the win for Kitsap, allowing three runs on six hits in 51/3 innings.

Sean Greer allowed one run in 31/3 innings for the save.

Football

Linfield College has been selected by Northwest Conference football coaches as the favorite for the 2008 season, marking the eighth consecutive year the Wildcats have been the preseason favorite.

Whitworth, the two-time defending regular season champion, was picked second.

•Washington State’s Sept. 20 home game against Portland State will be televised by FSN. Game time is 4 p.m.

Five other WSU games were already scheduled to air on FSN: vs. Oklahoma State in Seattle, Aug. 30; vs. California, Sept. 6; at Baylor, Sept. 13; vs. USC, Oct. 18; and vs. Washington, Nov. 22.

Volleyball

The Idaho Vandals were tied for third in the Western Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ volleyball poll.

Twelve-time defending conference regular-season champion Hawaii was first, with New Mexico State second. San Jose State was tied with Idaho.

Basketball

Former Washington State standout Derrick Low has signed to play for the Sydney Spirit of the Australia National Basketball League.

Recently, Low played for the Dallas Mavericks’ team in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, averaging 1.8 ppg.
