3 Cougars boats will row today
Washington State advanced all three of its boats to Petite Finals today when the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships at Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Calif., wind up.
The Cougars’ Varsity 8 showed the effects of having to row two races Friday and wound up last in its six-boat semifinal, 19 seconds back of winner Yale. In a Second Varsity 8 semifinal, WSU was a strong third behind winner Virginia and California. And in the Varsity 4 semifinals, the Cougars again were third, trailing Michigan State and Yale.
WSU coach Jane LaRiviere said she didn’t think the Varsity 8 had a poor race, it was just the two races they rowed Friday to get into the semifinals were taxing. “It’s tough to do it that way,” she said.
Washington advanced all three of its boats to the National Grand Finals for the first time in seven seasons. The Huskies’ Varsity 8 was a semifinal heat runner-up, and the Second Varsity 8 won its repechage heat. The Varsity 4 advanced with a heat victory Friday.
