100 years for Bison Range
40 million
Number of bison roaming in massive herds between Mexico and central Canada in the late 1700s.
100
Approximate number of bison left in the wild by 1900 after commercial hunters, railroaders and cattlemen wiped out the “nuisance” wildlife. The U.S. government apparently had wanted bison gone, too, in order to eliminate a primary food source of American Indians.
1908
Year President Teddy Roosevelt approved the National Bison Range in Montana, the first time in U.S. history Congress appropriated money to buy land expressly to provide shelter and space for wildlife.
350
Approximate number of bison in the herd maintained on the 18,500-acre Bison Range near Moeise, Mont.
31
Number of public areas that are home to bison in the United States, including three national parks, half a dozen national wildlife refuges and 22 state preserves.
OUTSKI
Banner year for the boards
Skiers and snowboarders are still rocking from the tremendous 2007-2008 winter ski conditions.
How good was it?
Snoqualmie Pass posted a record 714,000 visits, up 100,000 from its previous high.
49 Degrees North and Mount Hood Meadows set all-time visitor records.
“These numbers are remarkable, because we had no November,” said Scott Kaden, Pacific Northwest Ski Areas Association president.
Washington ski resorts finished with about 2.1 million visits, only about 50,000 off the record winter of 2001-02.
