While clubs and guidebooks are great options for getting paddlers into idyllic waters, an outfitter that provides the guides, itinerary, food and rental boats may be the best option for many people.

Sea Kayak Adventures based in Coeur d’Alene has excellent trips for paddlers of all abilities, with discounts for families.

The best summer trips head to the orca-whale havens at Johnstone Strait, British Columbia.

After 12 years of operating in Johnstone Strait, “We’ve got it down to a science,” said Nancy Mertz, SKA co-owner. “Many outfitters go out from a base camp, but we’ve found a really good way to loop through the area to maximize the chance of seeing orcas as well as other marine wildlife.”

For people who prefer a base location, SKA has a choice spot in a marine sanctuary called God’s Pocket, where they base out of a cozy little lodge.

The islands at the north end of Vancouver Island provide sheltered paddling with 20-minute crossings between islands, perfect for novices.

Food is gourmet, including daily home-baked lunches.
