Free summer meals for children

Free meals will be served to children at 13 Spokane Valley schools and parks this summer, providing breakfast and lunch to any child who needs it.

The meals are available to anyone under 18 and no registration is required. Children do not have to be a student of the host school district to participate.

The federally funded summer meal program seeks to provide food to children in low-income areas who might otherwise go hungry without free or reduced price meals they normally get at school.

•Spokane Public Schools will host meals at the Edgecliff Neighborhood Center. Breakfast and lunch will be served Monday through Friday, June 16 to Aug. 15, excluding July 4. Breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. and lunch will be available from noon to 12:30 p.m. The center is in the old Pratt Elementary at 6903 E. Fourth Ave.

•Central Valley School District will provide free summer meals at North Pines Middle School, 701 N. Pines Road. Meals will be available Monday through Thursday, June 23 through July 25, excluding July 3. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. and lunch will be available from noon to 12:45 p.m.

•West Valley School District will serve meals at Orchard Center Elementary, 7519 E. Buckeye Ave., Centennial Middle School, 925 N. Ella Road and West Valley High School, 8301 E. Buckeye Ave. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at each school Monday through Thursday. Meal dates are June 16 through July 10 and Aug. 4 through 21 at Orchard Center, and from July 14 through 31 at Centennial and West Valley High School.

•East Valley School District is teaming with Spokane Valley Parks and Recreation and the Valley YMCA to offer meals at numerous sites. The meals will be served Monday through Thursday from June 16 to Aug. 14. Some sites will serve only one meal per day. Locations and times are: Trent Elementary, 3303 N. Pines Road, breakfast from 8:15 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.; East Valley High School, 15711 E. Wellesley Ave., breakfast from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Otis Orchards Elementary, 22000 E. Wellesley Ave., lunch from 11:30 a.m. to noon; Valley YMCA, 2421 N. Discovery Place, breakfast from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Edgecliff Park, 800 S. Park Road, lunch from 1 to 1:30 p.m.; Browns Park, 3019 S. Pines Road, lunch from 1 to 1:30 p.m.; Sullivan Park, 1901 N. Sullivan Road, breakfast from 9 to 9:30 a.m.; Terrace View Park, 13500 E. 24th Ave., breakfast from 9 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m.
