Fed up with the Mariners

The Spokesman-Review

It is nice to see a reporter finally attacking the Mariners as Mr. (John) Blanchette has been doing lately. Sportswriters have the power of the press. Barry Bonds is a good example. Sportswriters made him MVP several times, when it was obvious that there was something being used to turn a 25/30 homer-a-year hitter into a 60/70 homer hitter.

The Mariners need to start with getting rid of (general manager Bill) Bavasi. It is his signings and trades that are failures. (Jarrod) Washburn is over the hill and gives up too many homers. (Richie) Sexson and (Adrian) Beltre seem to get hits only when the bases are empty and strike out and hit into double plays with men on. It is a long list of failures.

Next are the manager and his staff. Pitchers are left in too long, causing too much damage. Outfielders play too shallow and too many balls are being hit over their heads.

The scouts and farm system need examining. Where are the Mariners’ superstars? Oakland and Atlanta seem to find them.
