Outlaws weave win over Spiders
After dictating the pace of the game for most of the match, the Spokane Spiders ran out of energy.
The Spiders allowed the visiting Ogden Outlaws to score two goals late in the second half and escape with a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Spokane Falls Community College.
The Spiders (2-5-1) were spent after playing a man down almost the entire game the night before.
“Its hard playing back to back, our guys were just spent,” said first-year Spokane coach Jake Moug.
The Outlaws (2-2-2) scored both of their goals within three minutes of each other.
In the 69th minute, midfielder Max Malmquist and forward Gabriel Akito connected a quick passing combination that found Akito right in front of the Spider’s goal. He slotted the ball in the lower-right corner past Spokane keeper Scott Barnum for the game-tying goal.
The Outlaws scored the go-ahead goal three minutes later when midfielder Matt Broadhead pushed a perfectly weighted through pass behind the Spider defense to substitute forward Andrew Cornia. Cornia blasted the ball into the lower-left corner of the goal.
The Spiders got on the scoreboard first. In the 29th minute, forward Scott Davidson was awarded a penalty kick after receiving a forearm shiver to the back of his head by Ogden defender Mike Hickman Jr.
Davidson calmly slotted the penalty kick in the upper-right corner of the goal giving the Spiders a 1-0 lead.
The Spiders missed a number of scoring opportunities after Davidson put them on the board.
In the 61st minute Jay Vila intercepted a poor pass from Ogden fullback Flynn Stewart-Franzen to his goalkeeper Michael Chesler, but Vila failed to put the ball in the back of the net.
“We need to work on our finishing,” said Moug.
Spokane’s midfield played excellent but unfortunately could not keep up their stellar play throughout the game.
Playmaker Matt Friesen continually threatened the Outlaw defense with a number of dangerous runs up the right side of the field. His crosses continually found the heads of forwards Ty Pardido and Davidson, but Spokane failed to convert on the chances.
The Spiders head to Canada next week to play the Abbotsford Rangers and the Vancouver Whitecaps.
