Photography workshop at Turnbull

On Saturday, Rich Leon, a local photographer, will hold a wildlife photography workshop and photo-finding hike, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, 26010 South Smith Road in Cheney.

There is a $3 entry fee, per vehicle, paid at the refuge gate. Funding is by donation.

Wrestling camp planned for July

The Cheney Mat Hawks will host the wrestling Olympian Camp on July 26 and 27 at Cheney Middle School at 2716 N. Sixth St., from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Cost for the camp is $50.

The deadline to register is Saturday. No walk-up registration is accepted and space is limited to 160 wrestlers.

Poet laureate to speak at EWU

Sam Green, the first poet laureate of the state of Washington will speak at the JFK Library at Eastern Washington University at 4:30 p.m. next Thursday.

Green’s talk, “Poetry in the Every Day,” will be his first public speech on the east side of the state since being named state poet laureate in December 2007 by Gov. Chris Gregoire. His book, Vertebrae: Poems 1972-1996, was published by EWU Press.

The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to support the EWU Friends of the Library, which is sponsoring the talk. A reception will follow the presentation.

Tour steps into history of EWU

The annual Walking Tour of Eastern Washington University’s campus will be June 23 at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by the EWU Friends of the Library.

The 90-minute tour will begin with a slide show in the second-floor lounge of Monroe Hall. Charles Mutschler, the university’s archivist, will conduct the tour, providing narration as attendees walk through the EWU Historic District. He will discuss the buildings and the people for whom they are named, the architecture and colorful stories of the university’s past.

A reception will end the tour with refreshments.

SCOPE seeks new board members

The Sherriff’s Community Oriented Policing Effort is looking for four to five people to become board members.

Board members review and approve plans for new SCOPE programs, along with monitoring activities at the SCOPE stations, and oversee contracts with Spokane County programs involving community volunteers.

Members meet once a month at 5:30 p.m., at the Vera Water and Power District, in the conference room, at 601 N. Evergreen Road in the Spokane Valley. Board members will also meet for a half-day annual retreat.
