Wal-Mart robbery suspect sought

The Spokesman-Review

Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information that identifies a woman wanted in a robbery in which a security guard was injured and a man who intervened was charged with a felony.

A woman described as white and in her 20s with short, sandy hair shoplifted cosmetics from the Wal-Mart at 15727 E. Broadway Ave. in Spokane Valley on June 6, Spokane County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan said.

As security officers attempted to stop the woman, 33-year-old Scott E. Hughes interfered with a male officer, allowing the woman to get away, Reagan said.

Hughes was subsequently charged with third-degree assault even though he told authorities he thought the guards were attacking the woman.

After Hughes intervened, the woman backed up her car and knocked a female security officer to the pavement before driving away. The officer injured her head, Reagan said.

The woman’s car was described as a dark-colored Subaru Outback with Washington plates beginning with 518.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (509) 327-5111.

Man’s death ruled apparent drowning

A Colville man pulled from the Spokane River in March apparently fell in rather than committed suicide, as police initially believed, according to a Spokane County medical examiner’s report.

Joseph Truscott, 46, died from apparent drowning, said his brother-in-law, Jim Perkins.

Truscott, who worked as an auto mechanic, was found on March 9 pinned against a metal gate in front of an Avista pumping station in Riverfront Park, police previously reported. Workers used a boom crane to retrieve him.

The medical examiner waited for a toxicology report – which takes six to eight weeks – before determining how Truscott died, Perkins said.

Amy the zebra dies at Seattle zoo

The Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle says a 32-year-old female zebra named Amy is dead.

The zebra was unable to stand on Tuesday and zoo officials say she was humanely euthanized due to her advanced age and age-related conditions that caused stiffness and discomfort in her legs.

Zoo officials say zebras may live about 20 to 30 years in the wild. Amy had been at the zoo since 1977.
