Children in kindergarten through the eighth grade are invited to attend the 2008 Blackhawk Cheerleader Workshop July 9-10 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the main gym of Cheney High School, 460 N. Sixth.

Deadline to register is July 1 and registration forms have been sent to all the schools in the Cheney School District.

The cost is $50 and there are no refunds.

Medical Lake

Parks department offers swim lessons

The city of Medical Lake’s Parks and Recreation Department is offering swimming lessons on the beach of Waterfront Park.

There are two sessions. The first will meet from July 7 to July 18 Monday through Friday except for the Fourth of July when there will be no lessons. The second session will be held from July 21 through Aug. 1 Monday through Friday.

Beginners will meet from 10 to 10:45 a.m. and intermediate swimmers will meet from 11 to 11:45 a.m.

The cost to attend is $35.

Register to play adult slow-pitch

Deadline to register for co-ed slow-pitch softball through the Medical Lake, Airway Heights and Cheney Adult Sports League is June 27.

All teams must have at least 10 players and have a minimum of five women on the roster. Games will be played on Sunday evenings from July 13 through Aug. 17. There is a team fee of $360.

There will also be a captains’ meeting July 2 at 6 p.m. at Medical Lake City Hall, S. 124 Lefevre St.

There are three locations to register: Medical Lake Parks and Recreation, S. 124 Lefevre, Medical Lake, 565-5007; Airway Heights Parks and Recreation, 1208 S. Lundstrom St., Airway Heights, 498-9296; or Cheney Parks and Recreation, 615 Fourth St., Cheney, 244-4845.

Community sale planned July 12-13

The city of Medical Lake is coordinating a community yard sale July 12 and 13.

The sale will be held at various locations throughout the city limits of Medical Lake.

If you would like to have your address added to the yard sale list and map, the deadline is July 9.

EWU hires new dean of students

Al Thompson was recently named the new associate vice president of student affairs and dean of students at Eastern Washington University.

Thompson is currently the assistant to the chancellor for affirmative action and diversity at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and has about 23 years of student affairs and executive experience in higher education. As assistant, he is active in improving the overall campus climate and routinely provides advice on university policies and procedures.

He has tenure in the University of Wisconsin system, which included a stop at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. This experience has helped him gain expertise in strategic planning, staff recruitment and retention, enrollment management and student success initiatives.

Thompson will begin his new role on Aug. 1, taking over for Bob Hille who has served as the interim dean during the past year.

Program teaches kids about astronomy

The Spokane Astronomical Society will host its annual Astronomy Day at the Shadle Library on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., said Jerry Eber of the society.

The event will include both indoor and outdoor activities and is designed to help children learn about astronomy.

Society members will bring some of their equipment for children to look through.
