NIC needs volunteers
The Adult Basic Education program at North Idaho College is in of volunteers, available to work a minimum of two hours per week.
Volunteers should possess good reading, writing and math skills, and enjoy working with adult learners.
The program will be held at the NIC Adult Education Center, located at 501 Lakeside Ave. The center offers adult basic education, which includes basic skill building in reading, writing, math and English as a second language.

Roundtable seats open
The Kootenai Metropolitan Organization’s Public Transportation Roundtable is currently accepting applications for several Citizen at Large member positions.
The newly formed Roundtable serves in an advisory capacity to the KMPO and provides recommendations on public transportation services and system improvements. The committee is also responsible for coordinating service, improving access to information for customers, exploring creative ways to maximize available funding, and advising the KMPO Board on policies and funding priorities for public transportation.
Prior public service or transportation experience is not necessary. Applications must be received by July 26.

Outdoor Pursuits camp
Beginning Monday, North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits program will offer a multisport summer camp for kids ages 12 to 16. The weeklong camp will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The camp will offer rock-climbing, sea kayaking, canoeing, whitewater rafting, sailing and hiking.
Cost for the camp is $249 and includes gear usage, transportation and instruction.

•The Outdoor Pursuits program has opened the NIC Beach Hut.
The Hut is located on NIC’s Yap-Keehn-Um Beach and is open everyday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. all summer long.
Rental boats include one person kayaks for $12 per hour, two-person kayaks for $14 an hour, lake kayaks for $9 per hour, canoes for $10 per hour and sailboats for $25 per hour.
Food and beverages also are for sale at the Hut.

•Other events at NIC include the Cardinal Heat pitching and position play skills camp, running July 28 through July 31. Spots are still available. The camp, held at Finucane Park, located on the northwest corner of Prairie Avenue and Fourth Street in Hayden, is for players ages 8 to 18.
The camp will be divided into two heats, one for pitching skills and the other is a position play/offensive heat. Both will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Participants in the pitching camp will receive instruction on pitching mechanics and be gunned for speed. Players participating in the position play/offensive camp will receive instruction on infield skills, outfield skills, catching, hitting, short game and base running. Participants can choose to stay in one position play or receive instruction in a combination of positions.
Campers will have the opportunity to practice the skills they learned in camp by participating in controlled practice games on the second and fourth days.
Cost is $200 for the pitchers heat camp and $150 for the position play/offensive heat camp.

BIG Raffle open house
The final open house for the 15th annual North Idaho College Really BIG Raffle will be held Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
The $300,000 grand prize custom home, at 2806 Marceille Drive in Coeur d’Alene, was built by the NIC carpentry students. Other prizes in the raffle include a $20,000 car, a $10,000 boat, and a $2,000 shopping spree.
Tickets for the raffle are $100 and will be sold at the open house and other Coeur d’Alene locations. Tickets will be available until they’re sold out. The drawing will be July 9 at the Fort Sherman Park on NIC’s campus.
Proceeds from the raffle benefit the NIC Foundation, providing funding for scholarships and other student and NIC program needs.

Bible school barbecue
Community Presbyterian Church, 417 N. William St. in Post Falls is holding a barbecue on Sunday at 5 p.m.
The event is a kickoff for their Vacation Bible school, running from Monday to Friday from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Hogs for Dogs ride
The second annual Hogs for Dogs to benefit the Kootenai Humane Society will be held on next Saturday and will bring dog lovers and motorcycle riders together for a good cause.
The ride will begin at the Lone Wolf Harley Davidson, 772 W. Appleway Ave. in Coeur d’Alene and finish at the Hoodoo Cafe, 2009 Deary St. in Harvard, Idaho. A barbecue with prizes and a raffle will follow the ride.
