Runs galore for local Midget League teams
Midget League teams from Summit, Otis Orchards and South Pines won twice to open the Spokane Valley League baseball season.
Summit outscored two foes by a 32-3 count as Daniel Dach hit a home run and three doubles. In one win Jackson Axtell struck out nine and Colin Gessler drove in three runs.
River City Pizza (Otis Orchards) piled up 34 runs in its victories as Steve Bundy went 8-for-8 with two triples and Darien Walker was 8-for-9 with a pair of doubles.
Intermountain Fabricators (South Pines) got a grand slam home run from Dylan Biagi in the second of the team’s 12-5 and 17-12 wins.
In other highlights, Autocraft (Greenacres) player Trevor Mitchell homered in each game and struck out eight in a 12-2 win. Payton Miller was 3-for-4 in a Spokane Endodontics PS (Ponderosa) victory and three players, Myles Sigel, Jared Dittmer and Robby Lemley, had three hits each in Spokane Recycling’s (Skyview) win.
Five teams in the PeeWee League got off to 2-0 starts. Sterling Self Storage (Adams), George Velis DDS (Chester I), McDonald’s (Liberty Lake I), Mark Spear Homeselling (Chester II) and Spokane Athletic Supply (Pasadena Park) are all unbeaten after a week.
Brady Sanders was 9-for-9 in McDonald’s two wins and Sammi Anderson had two hits, including a triple, in one win while pitching in both. Ethan Jones was 3-for-3 with two grand slam home runs and a double, and JT Neely was winning pitcher and went 3-for-4 with a homer in one George Velis DDS victory. Ethan Viles drove in the winning run in Mark Spear’s 7-6 win over AC Data. And in a Spokane Athletic Supply victory Austin Stevens was 4-for-5 with two home runs and six runs batted in. Michael Chan went 3-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs and Gunnar Cebriak was 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs. Josh Gibson pitched no-hit ball, striking out eight.
Girls softball begins
Spokane Valley Girls Softball season began this week with a handful of reported games.
In the 16U League, Tri-Diamond beat Walt’s Mailing 16-5, pitchers Victoria Martin and Rachel Honodel teaming up for nine strikeouts for the winners. Dairy Queen beat BNSF 14-4, with Ashley McCarty throwing seven strikeouts. And Farrell Spray Service beat Old Country Buffet 27-2, with Sarah Bowden pitching a one-hitter.
Maddie Kately and Kaylyn Jenson of Kim Hotstart combined for a triple play, but Old Country Buffet won the game 11-9 in a 14U League opener. Spokane Transfer topped Jewell Excavating, Shelby Harbison allowing no hits and striking out seven in three innings. Legends Photography beat Einstein’s Car Wash 13-11.
There were four 12U League games reported. Gabby Whit tripled during Sir Speedy’s 24-3 win over BNSF. Courtney Catran went 3-for-3 and Arby’s nipped Standard Brothers Lumber 11-10. Rebecca Horn of Standard hit a home run and triple. Dana Graphics beat Victory Lumber 30-0 and Jewell Excvating beat Old Country Buffet 18-12.
Four players – Aubrey West, Shayden Clark, Toria Clark and Madison Weiler were 4-for-4 as Mega Wash beat Old Country Buffet 18-6 in the 10U League opener. Sir Speedy beat Osprey 19-4, Josie Freier 2-for-4 and scoring four runs. Evergreen Heating beat Greenacres Gypsum 6-5, Jaicee Toles and Abby Bowman with a double play. F&F Foundation beat McCoys 18-10, Andrea Goodwin hitting a home run. BNSF beat Bridgestone 13-4 and McDonald’s squeezed past Spokane Vision 17-16.
Legion leaders
Valley teams are once more in the thick of things during American Legion baseball competition. The Bandits, who have been helped offensively by University players Danny Jordan, Jacob Olsufka, Billy Moon and Michael Holmes are 6-3 and vying with Pullman for first in AAA competition.
Central Valley (10-2) and University (7-2) are in the South AA title chase along with Lewis and Clark and Shadle Park and West Valley is not far behind.
CV and U-Hi teams are also contenders in the 16U A South Division.
Women’s golf
Painted Hills – Two weeks of competition was played in a variety of weather, but with solid scores. Sue Greany shot 45 and 47 on successive A flight outings for the best low gross scores. And she did it with flair, chipping in on the third hole and twice in successive weeks on No. 7.
B flight winners were Inga Klep with 52 and Sammie Fletcher with 55. Lynne Markeson shot 57s both times to win C flight, had a birdie on No. 4 and chip-in on No. 6. Lynn Vierling won D with scores of 60 and 62.
Net winners included Linda Church (37) and Betty Grassl (40) in A flight, June Hathaway (38 including a chip-in) and Joyce Jacobs (35) in B, Bette Devine (36) and Margaret Tirk (35) in C, Eleanore Badinger (33) and Cleo Workland (36) in D.
Liberty Lake 18s – This week was monthly Liberty Cup and putting competition. June’s winner was Louise Newtson who had low net of the field with 69. Putting winners were GiSue Peters with 29 in A flight, Honey Conlon with 29 in B, Newtson with 29 in C and Myrna Neubauer with 31 in D.
MeadowWood – Two weeks ago golfers counted the odd numbered holes and scored resultant handicap to determine weekly winners. Suzi Stone finished first with 34, Sharon Stone and Patsy Lynn tied for second with 36 and Sue Lightfoot was fourth with 37. This week during Partner Best Ball, Maggie Steffy and Marilyn McCanna had a net 64, Lynda Sahnow and Sue Meyer were second at 66 and Marie Nelson and Lee Sonderman finished with net 70.
Liberty Lake 9s – Weekly winners of the three-week Captain’s Cup were Lynda Sahnow with a first-flight 69 score, Kathy Camyn with 80 in second flight and Linda Barry with 86 in third. There were a couple of chip-ins, by Audrey Vanos on the 14th hole and Arla Beck on 17.
Trailhead at Liberty Lake – Weekly play produced a winning low-gross score of 53 by Marcia Rowley and net 30 by Betty Grassl in A flight. B flight leaders were Shirley Rodman with 55 gross and Deanna Hauser with 36 net. C flight was a tie at 62 by Renee Begovich and Penny Jones, while Cleo Workland had low net. Rowley and Peg Nadvornick had chip-ins.
