In brief: Motorcyclists injured in collision on I-90

The Spokesman-Review

Two motorcyclists suffered injuries Thursday after colliding on Interstate 90, near Veterans Memorial Bridge east of Coeur d’Alene, sending one man tumbling over the guardrail and down an embankment.

Scott R. Clinedinst, 31, and Adam J. Kammarcal, 29, both of Coeur d’Alene, were riding their 2007 Kawasaki motorcycles eastbound near milepost 18 at a high speed when one attempted to pass about 5:50 p.m., according to the Idaho State Police.

Police say the men brushed against each other, causing them to lose control.

Kammarcal was able to lay his bike down and sustained minor road rash, but Clinedinst was thrown over the guardrail. He seriously injured his knees, according to ISP.

He was taken to Kootenai Medical Center, where his condition was not available Thursday night.

Both men wore helmets, which police credited with saving their lives.

Man accidentally shoots self in face

A 42-year-old Spokane man was in critical condition Thursday after he tried to show his friends that his gun was unloaded by placing it to his face and pulling the trigger.

A 9 mm round passed through the man’s eye, Officer Tim Moses said. The man’s sister administered CPR until paramedics could transport him to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, Moses said.

The incident occurred about 1 a.m. at a home in the 2100 block of West Fairview Avenue, Moses said.

“There were several adults drinking. They were just some friends getting together and reminiscing,” Moses said.

“And this guy was showing off his pistol.”

After one of the other adults expressed concern about him having the gun out, the man took out the magazine and racked the gun’s action, which is necessary to remove the remaining bullet. He then fired the gun.

The shooting was determined to be an accident, and no charges were filed.

Police did not release the man’s identity.

“He was just being extremely careless,” Moses said.

Boys, 9 and 15, arrested in fires

Two Coeur d’Alene boys face third-degree arson charges after a KFC employee called 911 to report a small grass fire Wednesday evening.

Police and fire crews responded to the area of 200 E. Appleway Ave. about 5:30 p.m. and arrested a 9-year-old boy after employees identified him as the fire starter, according to the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested after another small fire nearby was discovered, deputy fire Chief Glenn Lauper said in a news release.

Officials believe the boys started the fires with cigarette lighters. The boys were released to their parents.
