A century-old checkers set

Larry Cox King Features Syndicate

Q: I have an old checkers set that was handcrafted a century ago by a woodworker in Ohio. The board and individual pieces are in excellent condition considering the fact that they are so old. Where can I have this set appraised? — Tom, Stigler, Okla.

A: Several sources that might be helpful are the American Checker Foundation, 5304 Barton Bale Court, Nashville, TN 37221; Don Deweber, John Caldwell-Irving Windt Library of Checkers, 3520 Hillcrest, Apt. 4, Dubuque, IA 52002; and collector Henry A. Justice, 30 Thomas Court, Stockbridge, GA 37221.

Q: My brother collected old cameras and lenses. I’m interested in finding out what, if anything, they are worth and where I can possibly sell them. Although a friend bought several, I put others on eBay with no results. Whatever advice you can give me will be appreciated. — M.J.Q., Sinsinawa, Wisc.

A: One of the better general reference books is The Antique Trader Cameras and Photographica Price Guide edited by Kyle Husfloen (KP Books, $19.99). This easy-to-use book features more than 1,500 detailed descriptions and 1,300 illustrations. It is available at larger bookstores or from the publisher, KP Books: www.krause.com, and 1-888-457-2873.

There are two publications that might also be helpful: CameraShopper, P.O. Box 1086, New Canaan, CT 06840; and Shutterbug Ads, 5211 S. Washington Ave., Titusville, FL 32780. John S. Craig is a dealer who buys and sells antique and collectible photographica — cameras, daguerreotypes, stereo viewers and literature. Contact him at Craig Cameras, P.O. Box 1637, Torrington, CT 06790; john@craigcamera.com; and www.craigcamera.com.

Q: My mother collected candles, and we now have about 300 of them. There are horses, witches, Christmas designs, castles and many others — some of them from as early as the 1950s. Where can we sell them? — Mary, Cedar Crest, N.M.

A: My advice is to list them on eBay. Although this will take time and patience, you will get the maximum amount of money for your collection.
