The Spokesman-Review

John Desmarais had three hits – including a home run – and drove in three runs to spark the Washington State Cougars to a 14-10 victory over the Wright State Raiders in non-conference action Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

It was the sixth straight win for the Cougars (6-2), whose 16-hit effort gave them 68 hits in their last four games.

Jim Murphy had a two-run home run and Riley Tubbs added a solo shot for WSU.

Gerald Ogrinc had a two-run home run for Wright State (0-5).

Jayson Miller (1-0) earned the victory for the Cougars. He allowed six runs – five earned – on 11 hits in six innings. He struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter.

The schools play the finale of the three-game series at noon today.

“Steve Parker belted a pair of home runs – one a three-run blast – and Kasey Ko added a three-run homer to rally the Brigham Young Cougars (2-5) to a 13-9 non-conference win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (3-5) at Washington Trust Field.

Gonzaga won the first three games of the four-game series.

Gonzaga reliever Chris Highmark (0-1), who transferred from BYU last year, was saddled with the loss. He allowed five runs on six hits in 21/3 innings.

Jason Chatwood tripled with two outs and the bases loaded to stake the Bulldogs to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Gonzaga also led 8-4 in the fifth after scoring four unearned runs – all with two outs – to snap a tie.

“The Clackamas Cougars (2-0) rolled to a non-conference doubleheader sweep – 4-3 and 6-1 – of the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (0-2) in The Dalles, Ore.

Adam Smith homered for the Sasquatch in the opener, while teammate Kelly Gau had a pair of hits in both games.

“The Whitworth Pirates (2-6, 1-1) blanked the Puget Sound Loggers 6-0 in the opener of a Northwest Conference doubleheader in Lewiston, but the Loggers (3-2, 1-1) bounced back for a 20-1 rout in the nightcap.

The schools meet again today in Lewiston for a league doubleheader.
