Men: Georgetown prevails
Roy Hibbert and Jonathan Wallace scored 20 points each to lift No. 11 Georgetown to a 70-68 overtime victory over No. 21 Marquette on Saturday in Milwaukee.
It was the fourth straight victory for Georgetown (24-4, 14-3), which came into the game tied with No. 13 Louisville for first place in the Big East standings. The Cardinals host Villanova today.
The Hoyas have won 11 of their last 13, with the losses coming at Louisville and Syracuse.
Wesley Matthews tied his career high with 22 points for Marquette (21-7, 11-6), which had a five-game winning streak snapped.
Marquette held the lead for most of regulation, building an 11-point lead 8 minutes into the second half. But a long offensive dry spell allowed Georgetown to rally.
James missed a long jump shot but Dwight Burke dunked the rebound, putting Marquette ahead 61-59. Burke then missed the free throw for the three-point play.
Patrick Ewing Jr. missed a driving layup with 11.1 seconds left, but he was fouled by Burke and went to the line with a chance to tie the game.
Ewing made the first and missed the second, cutting the lead to one, but Matthews grabbed the rebound and was fouled.
Matthews hit both free throws to put the Golden Eagles up three with 7.9 seconds left – but James fouled Wallace on a 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds remaining. He made all three free throws, tying the game.
Lazar Hayward’s last-second shot missed, and the game went to overtime.
(2) Memphis 76, Southern Mississippi 67: At Hattiesburg, Miss., Derrick Rose scored 23 points, including 11 in a 5-minute span of the second half, to help the Tigers (28-1, 14-0 C-USA) pull away to a victory over the Golden Eagles (15-13, 7-7).
Memphis clinched its third consecutive Conference USA regular-season title with its 37th straight league win.
(3) North Carolina 90, Boston College 80: At Boston, Tyler Hansbrough scored 25 points and the Tar Heels (27-2, 12-2 ACC) overcame 46 points from Tyrese Rice and an 18-point second-half deficit to defeat the Eagles (13-14, 4-10).
Rice surpassed his career highs of 32 points and six 3-pointers by halftime, making 8 of 9 from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes.
Texas Tech 83, (5) Texas 80: At Lubbock, Texas, Alan Voskuil scored 18 points, including six straight free throws down the stretch to lead the Red Raiders (15-13, 7-7 Big 12) to a win over the Longhorns (24-5, 11-3).
(6) Kansas 88, Kansas St. 74: At Lawrence, Kan., Brandon Rush scored 21 points and the Jayhawks (26-3, 11-3 Big 12) took advantage of Michael Beasley’s early foul trouble to build a big lead and cruise past the Wildcats (18-10, 8-6).
(7) Duke 87, N.C. State 86: At Raleigh, N.C., DeMarcus Nelson’s two free throws with 1:01 remaining gave Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski his 800th career victory.
Nelson and Jon Scheyer both scored 19 points for the Blue Devils (25-3, 12-2 ACC), who used a game-closing 14-5 run to secure the victory over the Wolfpack (15-14, 4-11).
(9) Xavier 66, George Washington 56: At Cincinnati, C.J. Anderson scored 15 points and the Musketeers (25-4, 13-1 Atlantic 10) wasted an 18-point lead before rallying for their 11th straight victory, a win over the Colonials (9-15, 5-9).
With their 25th victory, the Musketeers set a school record for regular-season wins.
(14) Butler 65, Detroit 31: At Indianapolis, Pete Campbell had 24 points on a career-high eight 3-pointers to lead the Bulldogs (27-3, 16-2 Horizon) to a victory over the Titans (7-22, 3-15).
(15) Connecticut 79, West Virginia 71: At Hartford, Conn., A.J. Price scored 24 points and the Huskies (23-6, 12-4 Big East) held on for their 12th win in 13 games with the victory over the Mountaineers (20-9, 9-7).
Jeff Adrien had 17 points and 10 rebounds – his 16th double-double of the season – for Connecticut, while Price hit five 3-pointers.
(16) Purdue 68, Northwestern 43: At West Lafayette, Ind., freshman Robbie Hummel scored 15 points and the Boilermakers (23-6, 14-2 Big Ten) got the victory over the Wildcats (8-19, 1-15).
Arkansas 78, (18) Vanderbilt 73: At Fayetteville, Ark., Sonny Weems scored 20 points and the Razorbacks (19-9, 8-6 SEC) held off the Commodores (24-5, 9-5), who were assessed a technical foul when they called a timeout they didn’t have in the final seconds.
(20) Drake 73, Wichita St. 63: At Des Moines, Iowa, Klayton Korver scored 19 points and Adam Emmenecker and Leonard Houston added 14 each as the Bulldogs (25-4, 15-3 MVC) closed their best regular season in 39 years with a victory over the Shockers (11-19, 4-14).
Bowling Green 89, (23) Kent St. 83: At Bowling Green, Ohio, Brian Moten scored 24 points and had six 3-pointers as the Falcons (13-14, 7-7 MAC) beat the Golden Flashes (23-6, 11-3).
