Cougs sweep series with Wright State
Paul Gran, Jim Murphy and Garry Kuykendall drove in two runs apiece to lead the Washington State Cougars to a 7-4 non-conference college baseball victory over the Wright State Raiders Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.
The Cougars (7-1) swept the three-game series and have won seven games and 15 non-conference series in a row.
Gran and Murphy each stroked a two-run homer for the Cougars.
Ross Vagedes drove in three runs for Wright State (0-6).
•Matt Starr doubled and tripled among his three hits and the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch beat the Linn-Benton Roadrunners 13-0 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at The Dalles, Ore.
Linn-Benton won the first game 1-0.
•Dan Belet and Scott Ward drove in two runs apiece to lead the Whitworth Pirates (3-7, 2-2) to a 7-4 Northwest League victory over the Puget Sound Loggers (3-4, 2-2) in the first game of a doubleheader at Lewiston. The Loggers rebounded to win the nightcap 11-6 behind the four RBIs of Jarvis Nohara, who also earned the victory with 31/3 innings of two-hit relief.
On Saturday, Michael Olsen drove in six runs and Puget Sound routed Whitworth 20-1 to salvage a split.
Mitch Ramsey and Billy Rigsby drove in two runs apiece to give Whitworth a 6-0 win in the opening game.
Softball
The defending national champion Linfield Wildcats (6-0, 4-0) swept four games from the Whitworth Pirates (1-7, 0-4) to open the Northwest Conference season Saturday and Sunday in Pasco.
On Saturday, Linfield scored 9-6 and 13-2 victories. On Sunday, the Wildcats won 5-2 and 13-2.
