Silva strong as Mariners defeat Padres

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Seattle nicked Jake Peavy with four hits and two runs in two innings, and the Padres’ right-hander took a line drive off the heel of his glove, in the Mariners’ 6-2 victory over San Diego on Sunday at Peoria, Ariz.

Carlos Silva looked comfortable for his new team. Seattle’s new No. 3 starter allowed one hit and one walk in two crisp innings. He struck out two – and bounced around as if it was July.

“Oh, yeah, I was fired up,” said Silva, who signed a $48 million, four-year contract this winter as a free agent from Minnesota. “I was concentrating like this was my first real game with this team.

“They have so many expectations. Then you try to do what they expect from you. Whatever happens in spring training for me will happen during the season.”

Seattle first baseman Richie Sexson went 2 for 3 with an RBI and run scored.

Seattle All-Star J.J. Putz entered in the fifth and allowed one hit and an unearned run on a Richie Sexson throwing error.

Fielder not happy with deal

Prince Fielder is frustrated about his contract.

The Milwaukee Brewers slugger renewed his deal for $670,000 on Sunday after finishing third in N.L. MVP voting last season.

“I’m not happy about it at all,” Fielder said. “The fact I’ve had to be renewed two years in a row, I’m not happy about it because there’s a lot of guys who have the same amount of time that I do who have done a lot less and are getting paid a lot more.

“But my time is going to come. It’s going to come quick, too.”

The first baseman will be eligible for arbitration after this season.

“Left fielder Ryan Braun, the N.L. Rookie of the Year last season, also had his contract renewed for $455,000 as did right fielder Corey Hart, who will make $444,000.

Patton can’t shoulder stiffness in arm

Troy Patton ended his side session after throwing just 10 pitches, a setback that forced the Baltimore Orioles to schedule another examination on the left-hander’s ailing shoulder to determine if he should be shut down.

The 22-year-old Patton made three starts with the Houston Astros last season before being sidelined in September with left biceps tendinitis.

Doctors think Patton has a possible slap tear in his labrum, although an MRI last month was inconclusive.
