Week ahead
WSU Cougars
Saturday: vs. Washington, 4:30 p.m. (FSN)
Outlook: The streak has reached six – as in how many consecutive games the Cougars have won against their cross-state rival. However, the Pac-10 season opener in Seattle was tight, with WSU pulling out a 56-52 decision. The Huskies have played well lately, winning four of their last seven. The game also marks the last time WSU seniors Kyle Weaver, Derrick Low and Robbie Cowgill, all important pieces in the Cougars’ basketball renaissance, will play in Beasley Coliseum, so emotions will be high in the arena.
Idaho Vandals
Saturday: vs. Utah State, 7:05 p.m.
Outlook: The Vandals have much to play for in their home and regular-season finale. It’s Senior Night for Idaho’s three seniors – Michael Crowell, Clyde Johnson and Darin Nagle. Idaho can finish as high as sixth or as low as eighth. The Vandals technically sit in sixth because they have the tiebreaker over Fresno State. If Idaho beats USU, it is guaranteed the sixth seed to the league tournament. To beat USU, Idaho must find a way to contain Jaycee Carroll, the WAC’s leading scorer (22.7 points per game).
Gonzaga Bulldogs
Sunday: WCC tournament semifinals, 6:30 p.m. (ESPN2)
Outlook: The top-seeded Bulldogs are chasing their fifth straight title and ninth in 10 seasons. Gonzaga will face No. 4 Santa Clara, No. 5 San Francisco or No. 8 Loyola Marymount at 6:30 in the semifinals. The Bulldogs swept all three opponents. USF and LMU play Friday, with the winner meeting Santa Clara on Saturday. No. 2 Saint Mary’s also has a bye into the semifinals, where it would meet No. 3 San Diego, provided the Toreros win their opener Saturday.
