January, Dosty lead Sun Devils past Huskies

Sybil Dosty had 17 points and 10 rebounds and former Lewis and Clark High School standout Briann January added 13 points and five assists, leading Arizona State past Washington 83-64 on Saturday in the second round of the Pac-10 women’s basketball tournament in San Jose, Calif.

The third-seeded Sun Devils advanced to today’s semifinals against No. 10 California (25-5), a 67-60 winner over Oregon. The second-seeded Golden Bears have beaten Arizona State twice previously this season.

Arizona State (21-9) is hoping to make a strong bid to earn the Pac-10 a third NCAA tournament berth and a fourth straight for the school.

Katelan Redmon, another LC High graduate, scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Washington, which was outrebounded 41-30 and finished its first season under coach Tia Jackson at 13-18. Laura McLellan added 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting and Sami Whitcomb scored 11.

The Sun Devils led throughout the second half but had to hit key baskets in crunch time. Washington cut the margin to 67-58 with just more than 3 minutes left before Reagan Pariseau (Central Valley High) hit back-to-back 3-pointers for ASU to put it out of reach.

•Senior Sara Denney made her final game for the Idaho Vandals a memorable one.

Denny scored a season-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Vandals (4-24, 3-13) to a 67-55 win over the Utah State Aggies (9-19, 5-11) in a Western Athletic Conference regular-season finale in Logan, Utah.

Idaho shot 45.5 percent from the floor – tying its season high – and won on the road for the first time this season.

The Vandals play San Jose State on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Las Cruces, N.M., for the right to play top-seeded Fresno State on Thursday.

•Soana Lucet scored a game-high 19 points and LaCale Pringle-Buchanan added 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds to lead the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles (30-2) to a 71-58 victory over the North Idaho Cardinals (21-10) in the championship game of the NJCAA Region 18 tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Cassie Pilkinton scored 14 to pace NIC.

•Jade Fulbright scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the second half to lead the 10th-ranked Lewis-Clark State Warriors (27-4) to a 70-60 win over the 12th-ranked Carroll College Fighting Saints (25-5) in the championship game of the Frontier Conference in Butte, Mont.

Caitlin Courchaine (Central Valley High) scored 13 points to lead Carroll.

LCSC advances to the NAIA national championships

•Nubia Garcia tallied 18 points, four steals and two blocked shots to lead the Montana State Bobcats (16-12, 11-5) to a 65-54 victory over the Eastern Washington Eagles (4-25, 1-15) in a Big Sky Conference regular-season finale in Cheney.

Julie Piper topped EWU with 17 points.

The victory secures the third seed in the conference tournament for Montana State. EWU’s season is over.

Men’s basketball

JR Gordon scored a game-high 21 points and Mike Gordy added 17 points to lead the Lewis-Clark State Warriors (22-9) to a 65-63 victory over the Montana State-Northern Lights (22-10) in the championship game of the Frontier Conference tournament in Butte, Mont.

The win gives the Warriors an automatic berth into the NAIA national tourney.

•The second-seeded Salt Lake Bears (29-3) upset the top-seeded College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles (30-2) 81-77 in the title game of the NJCAA Region 18 tourney in Twin Falls, Idaho.
