Redbands fade in Spokane

The future of redbands, the native rainbow trout of the Spokane River, will be discussed by state biologists, enforcement officers and local anglers in a panel discussion Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at the Community Building, 35 W. Main Ave.

The program is sponsored by Trout Unlimited.

TU members are trying to educate the community about the impacts redbands are suffering from poaching, low river flows, water quality and development.

The effort isn’t a day too soon, said Madonna Luers, Department of Fish and Wildlife spokeswoman.

“We have one fish biologist whose sole job is to document the redband’s occurrence in the river, and he’s finding that they are more and more rare” she said. “Our enforcement officers say they write tickets left and right to poachers on the Spokane River. This is our native trout and it’s going the way of the dinosaur if we’re not careful.”
