Ham on Regal variety show runs through Saturday

“Remote Possibilities,” the 46th annual Ham on Regal variety show staged by Ferris High School parents and alumni, continues through Saturday at the school.

The shows strings together 16 song-and-dance comedy numbers that juxtapose and interpose TV shows of the past with current ones and depicts often awkward attempts to breach the cultural gaps between parents and their adolescent offspring.

Evening shows start at 7:30, and there is a Saturday matinee at 1:30 p.m. Seating will begin 45 minutes prior to show times. Tickets cost $8 for evening shows and $6 for the matinee and are available at Round Table Pizza on South Regal, 2nd Look Books in Lincoln Heights, Rosauers on 29th, the Ferris High Business Office and from any cast member. South Spokane

Little League skills evaluation is Saturday

Spokane South Little League will hold its annual skills evaluation on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Thornton Murphy Park.

The skills evaluation process is used to draft players onto Majors or AAA teams based upon a player’s skills level. All players ages 11 and 12 are evaluated for the Majors level along with 10-year-olds who desire to be evaluated.

All players 10 and 11 are evaluated for the AAA level along with 8-year-olds who desire to be evaluated. Players already on a Majors level team roster are not required to attend the skills evaluation unless they want to change teams. The tentative schedule for the skills evaluation is listed on the league Web site at www.spokanelittleleague.org along with the 2008 player selection process.

Registration for Juniors, Majors and AAA closes Saturday. AA, A (coach pitch) and T-Ball registration closes on March 31. Late fees apply for registrations after such dates.

Children between 5 and 15 who live in south Spokane (Lewis and Clark, Ferris, Freeman and Liberty High School districts) are invited to play. Registration is required even for those who have played previously.

West Central

Junior League holding rummage sale

The Junior League of Spokane will hold a rummage sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Girl Scouts Council Gymnasium, 1404 N. Ash St.

It features a large variety of low-priced items from more than 100 families, including clothing, toys, books, furniture, household items. All proceeds will go into projects benefiting the community.

The Junior League is a women’s volunteer and training nonprofit organization whose emphasis is helping women and children in the Spokane Community.

East Central

Seminar will address legal issues for seniors

A seminar titled “Legal Issues Affecting Seniors” will be held April 15 from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the multipurpose room of the East Central Senior Center, 500 S. Stone St.

The presenter is elder law attorney Lynn St. Louis, who will discuss elder law and estate planning, including powers of attorney for financial and health matters, wills, health care directives/living wills, and Medicaid long-term care benefits. St. Louis is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, serving as president of the Washington chapter for 2008.

Daigre named to MOAA committee

Beth Ann Daigre has been named to serve a three-year term on the Auxiliary Member Advisory Committee of the Military Officers Association of America.

Daigre, a member of the MOAA’s Spokane chapter, will join five other surviving spouses for the association’s 367,000 membership. She was nominated by Merl Gorton, president of MOAA’s Washington State Council of Chapters. She currently serves on the Spokane MOAA Chapter’s Board of Directors as the auxiliary liaison, Web page coordinator (spokanemoaa.org) and newsletter editor. Daigre and her husband moved to the Spokane area in 1991 after his retirement at his last duty station, North Island NAAS, Coronado, Calif.

The MOAA’s Spokane chapter serves more than 500 members in Northeast Washington and North Idaho. The nonprofit veterans’ association is dedicated to maintaining a strong national defense and to preserving the earned entitlements of members of the uniformed services and their families and survivors.

Richardson named chair of Girl Scouts board

Jan Richardson is the new board of directors chair for Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. Richardson has been the president of Spokane Motor Cars Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo since March 2004.

Richardson grew up with Girl Scouts and has served on the Board of Directors of Girl Scouts Inland Empire Council since 2004. Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho is a newly merged council, combining resources and staff of the former Girl Scouts Inland Empire Council based in Spokane and Girl Scouts Mid-Columbia Council based in Kennewick. Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho currently serves over 8,000 Girl Scouts and 2,500 adult volunteers in 32 counties.

Whitworth

Lecture will address politics of Latin America

Lindy Scott, a Spanish professor at Whitworth University, will present, “Why Latin America is Shifting to the Left: We Need to Understand Our Southern Neighbors,” today at 7:30 p.m. in the Robinson Teaching Theatre of Weyerhaeuser Hall on the Whitworth campus, 300 W. Hawthorne Road.

Part of the school’s 51st Annual Great Decisions Lecture Series, Scott is the co-editor of the book “Terrorism and the War in Iraq: A Christian Word from Latin America,” and editor of the book “Christians, the Care of Creation, and Global Climate Change.” He holds a doctorate from Northwest University.

Nominate an outstanding volunteer

Each year the Spokane County United Way honors and recognizes volunteers who have devoted their time and talents to help make a difference in our community. Nomination categories include individual, business, senior, young adult and team.

Meeting will address affordable home ownership

Community Frameworks will hold an informational meeting about affordable home ownership Tuesday at the Cheney City Library, 610 First St., Cheney, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Topics will include how to earn a down payment and pay for closing costs by working on the home, as well as low-cost financing.

Free Bloomsday training clinics start Saturday

Free training clinics for Bloomsday participants start Saturday and will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Saturdays for seven weeks prior to Bloomsday at the Spokane Falls Community College gym.

Meet at the gym for a training talk and warm-up activities followed by a walk or run on an outdoor course. Training begins with a one-mile course and increases a mile each week. Water stations, first aid, crossing guards and volunteer support staff keep participants safe.

Chocolate festival will benefit SCRAPS

Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service will host its third annual Chocolate Festival and Auction on March 28 to raise money for the SCRAPS animal shelter, shelter programs and the Animal Medical Fund.
