MARYSVILLE, Wash. – Burlington Northern Santa Fe said a freight train was traveling 49 mph when it collided with the trailer of a semitruck at a crossing near Marysville.

Spokesman Gus Melonas said the crash at 5:45 a.m. Monday split the truck, spilling its load of cakes and pizzas, and caused three locomotives and a boxcar to derail.

Melonas said the truck driver and the train engineer were taken to a hospital.

Melonas said there is a stop sign at the crossing and the train was blowing its whistle and applying the emergency brake at the time of the crash.

Nothing spilled from the train. The derailed engine blocked a nearby street.

Melonas said crews hoped to have the train back on track by Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, the closure meant Amtrak passengers had to be bused on Monday, but Melonas said Amtrak service would resume this morning.
