U-Hi’s Owen wins at Dapper Dan

University state champion Brian Owen won his 125-pound match during last weekend’s 34th Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic in Pittsburgh.

Owen, who has a 125-5 career record, defeated Derek Reber (165-10) 7-3 as the USA All-Stars beat the Pennsylvania All-Stars 28-12 in the dual match.

“Other than the Japanese match (earlier this year), this was the best wrestler Brian has faced,” said his dad, John.

Owen got a late first-round takedown to take the initial lead and broke a 2-all tie with a reversal and near fall in the third round, John Owen said.

Next for Brian is the Dream Duals April 12 in Iowa City, where the No. 2 nationally ranked athlete will face top-ranked Nate Moore in his West High gym.

Ex-Eagle Stanley out at Fort Lewis

Former Eastern Washington University associate athletic director Kent Stanley recently resigned as athletic director at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Calif., according to the school’s sports information office.

No reason was given by the university for the resignation, which takes effect “no later than July 1, 2008.”

Stanley was the associate athletic director at Eastern and director of the Eagle Athletic Association, EWU’s official booster organization. He left Eastern in August 2006 for the job at Fort Lewis.
