Easter celebration services, events planned

Area churches are celebrating Holy Week. Here is a sampling of some of the many services that are being offered.

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will observe Maundy Thursday with a soup supper in the Great Hall at 6 p.m. A Maundy Thursday Eucharist will be at 7 p.m.

Good Friday will be observed with a liturgy at noon, meditations on the Passion of Christ at 1 p.m., the Stations of the Cross at 2 p.m. and a Tenebrae at 7 p.m. Child care will be available for the 7 p.m. service.

At 7 p.m. on Holy Saturday, the church will offer the Great Vigil of Easter.

There will be two services on Easter Sunday offering Holy Eucharist celebrating the Feast of the Resurrection at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. A coffee hour will follow each service and child care is available.

Foothills Community Church, 11102 N. Forker Road, will offer a Good Friday worship with community Friday at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a sunrise service Easter Sunday at 7 a.m. followed by a breakfast and Resurrection services at 9 and 11 a.m.

Heritage Congregational Church, 1801 E. 29th Ave., is offering a foot-washing ceremony and Maundy Thursday Communion service at 7 p.m.

They also will present the movie, “The Passion of the Christ,” on Good Friday at 7 p.m.

The church will hold a Resurrection morning worship service at 10 a.m., followed by a pancake breakfast fundraiser by the Men of Heritage.

Mission Community Presbyterian Church, 2103 E. Mission Ave., will present an enactment of the Lord’s Supper with Emmanuel and Westminster Churches Maundy Thursday at 7 p.m. Communion will be served.

The church will offer a Good Friday service with Communion at 7 p.m., and it’s Easter Sunday service will be at 10 a.m.

Fellowship will follow the Easter service.

The church sanctuary also will be open from noon until 3 p.m. on Good Friday.

Fowler United Methodist Church, 3928 N. Howard St., will offer a Maundy Thursday meal at 6 p.m. and a service at 6:45 p.m.

On Good Friday, the Communion Table will be set up in the church sanctuary from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

There will be an Easter Sunday worship service at 10:30 a.m. and breakfast served at 9 a.m.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1620 N. Monroe St., will offer a Maundy Thursday worship service at 6 p.m.

The church’s Good Friday service will be at noon, and the Easter Sunday worship service will be held at 10:30 a.m.

First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar St., will offer a dinner on Maundy Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The cost for dinner is $5 for adults and free for children.

Worship will follow the dinner at 7 p.m. and will include Communion.

On Good Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., the sanctuary will be open for reflection. There will be a service at 7 p.m. which will include Scripture readings and music.

Easter Sunday will hold Resurrection services at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and at 11 a.m.

Child care will be available for children from infants to kindergarteners at all worship services.

Shadle Park Presbyterian Church, 5508 N. Atlanta St., will offer a Good Friday service at 7 p.m.

The service will reflect on the significance of the death of Christ and will feature music from Taize, France.

The kids will get a chance to hunt for Easter eggs Saturday at 11 a.m. Over 2,000 plastic eggs will be up for grabs.

On Easter Sunday, the church will celebrate with a traditional worship with the choir at 9 a.m. and a contemporary worship service with the Worship Team at 10:45 a.m.

“The Spokane Dream Center will present an Easter drama, “Behold the King,” on Good Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the INB Performing Arts Center.

Admission to the event is free.

Audubon Park United Methodist Church, 3908 N. Driscoll Blvd., will offer a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. Child care will be provided.

The church will present an Easter breakfast in the fellowship hall from 8 to 11 a.m. There will be worship services at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and a Sunday School class at 9:30 a.m.

“The Interfaith Council will present a Community Sunrise Service Easter Sunday at 6:30 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery, 211 N. Government Way.

Pastor Joyce O’Connor-Magee of Manito United Methodist Church will deliver the sermon.

The Interfaith Council will accept donations at the service, which also will have American Sign Language interpreters.

Crestline Church of the Nazarene, 4520 N. Crestline St., will offer a Good Friday worship service at 3 p.m.

On Easter Sunday, the church will present, “Celebration of the Empty Tomb” at 9 a.m., followed by breakfast and then a worship service at 10:30 a.m.

An Easter egg hunt for the children will follow the services.

New Community Church will hold an Easter service at 10 a.m. Easter Sunday at the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox.

The service will discuss different causes in the community and the hope behind them.

New Vision Lutheran Church will hold an outdoor Sunrise Service at 7 a.m. Sunday at BA Clark Park on the corner of Garland Avenue and Division Street.

After the service there will be a breakfast served at the church at 1047 W. Garland Ave. from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and a Resurrection Day service at 10 a.m.

Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ, 411 S. Washington St., will hold “An Evening Remembering the Upper Room” at 7 p.m. in the social hall of the church.

On Good Friday at noon, the church will offer a Good Friday Walk to pray for the city, people both famous and unknown, and remember the walk the Jesus took.

The church also will be open for prayer from noon to 5 p.m.

On Easter Sunday, the church will celebrate the risen Christ starting at 8:30 a.m. with breakfast and a service at 10:30 a.m.

St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St., will offer “The Night BeFor Jesus Died,” Thursday at 7 p.m. The story will be told in “Four Ritual Acts.”

On Good Friday at noon, the church will hold “Passion and Prayers” with no music and at 6 p.m. there will be a “Children’s Experiential Holy Week Story.”

On Saturday at 7 p.m. the church will hold Easter Vigil with scripture, song, darkness and light, fire and water and bread and wine.

Easter Sunday brings 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Festival Eucharist celebrations with music.

Southridge Community Church will hold an Easter egg hunt for kids that are babies through age 12.

The hunt will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Thornton Murphy Park on the corner of 27th Avenue and Ray Street.

Purim

Chabad of Spokane County will throw a Purim Bash today at 6:30 p.m. at the Chabad Center, 4116 E. 37th Ave.

Attendees are encouraged to come dressed in costume, and the evening will start with a performance of a musician for the children.

There will be a chance to make your own hamantasch, refreshments and more.

Purim is the celebration of the salvation of the Jewish people from Haman’s plot to “destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day,” in the year 356 BCE, according to a press release from the Chabad Center.

It is celebrated by the reading of the Megillah, or Scroll of Esther, sending food parcels to friends, giving gifts of money to the poor and enjoying a festive meal.

Baha’i New Year

The Baha’is of Spokane will celebrate its new year or Naw Ruz today at 6 p.m. in the Center Pointe Building, 1408 N. Washington St.

The event is astronomically fixed to begin the new year on the spring equinox.

The celebration will include a potluck, special archive displays from 1907, entertainment and devotions.

Spring luncheon, card party

St. Francis of Assisi, 4420 N. Jefferson St., will present its annual spring luncheon and card party Wednesday at 3 p.m.

The menu will include a chicken casserole, green salad, fruit, rolls, a surprise dessert and coffee or tea.

The cost is $6 a person and reservations must be made by Saturday.

Family movie night

Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church, 4449 N. Nevada St., will present the movie, “Prince of Egypt,” Friday at 7 p.m.
