NIC Jazz presents concert
The North Idaho College Jazz Ensemble will present “A Solution,” a concert themed according to this year’s NIC Popcorn Forum Convocation Series Symposium at 7:30 p.m. Friday in NIC’s Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.
The concert will begin with video clips from a series by filmmaker Ken Burns on how jazz music builds harmony and requires cooperation.
The concert will kick off with performances of Jaxon Stock’s arrangement of the Dixie song “Back Bottom Stomp” by Jelly Roll Morton, the Count Basie classic “88 Basie Street” and “Max” by John Clayton, the artistic director of the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival.
The highlight of the concert will be the premier of the piece “Part of the Solution Suite,” which was commissioned especially for this concert by Vern Sielert, trumpet and jazz professor at the University of Idaho. The three movements “Issues – Time is Marching,” “Educate to Communicate” and “Where There is a Will” represent this year’s Popcorn Forum theme “Earth in Crisis: A Search for Solutions.” The concert will cap the Popcorn Forum event, which wraps up March 21.
The performance is free and open to the public.

Kiefer principal honored by state
Betty Kiefer Elementary School Principal Debbie Long has been named the 2008 Idaho National Distinguished Principal of the Year.
Long, who has worked for Lakeland School District for almost 30 years, was nominated for the honor by her vice principal, Lisa Sexton, and selected by the Idaho Association of Elementary School Principals.
“She’s a strong advocate for her building and the district,” said Lakeland Superintendent Chuck Kinsey, who added that Long’s leadership has helped both students and other administrators.
“When you go into Betty Kiefer Elementary you’ll see it’s a building focused on students and student achievement,” Kinsey said. “Debbie is unwavering in that.”
The school’s test scores consistently meet or exceed state standards.
Long will travel later this year to Washington, D.C., along with winners from each of the other 49 states, to collect her award.
