Rosholt wrestles way to quarterfinals

Sandpoint graduate Jared Rosholt of Oklahoma State won his first two matches of the NCAA wrestling championships in St. Louis Thursday and is set to face Matt Fields of Iowa in the quarterfinals.

Local wrestlers who went 1-1 and are in the consolation bracket include Boise State’s Cory Fish (University High) at 133 pounds, Levi Jones (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls) at 141, Adam Hall (Bonners Ferry) at 149, and Stanford’s Luke Feist (Sandpoint) at 174. Oklahoma’s Joey Fio (Sandpoint) went 1-2 at 125 and was eliminated.

Basketball

Whitworth senior forward Ryan Symes has been named to the 2008 National Association of Basketball Coaches NCAA Division III All-West Region first team. It is his second honor in as many days as he was already named D3hoops.com first-team All-Region. Symes averaged 19.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game this season for the Pirates.

•The Lewis-Clark State College men’s team fell to the University of the Cumberlands 75-62 in the opening round of the NAIA Division I basketball championships in Kansas City, Mo.

The Warriors shot 36.8 percent from the field and finished the season 22-10.

Baseball

Tyson Ross gave up one run in seven innings as No. 12 California beat No. 25 Washington 9-1 in Pac-10 play at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Ross (3-0) gave up two hits and three walks while striking out five.

Second baseman Josh Satin went 2 for 4 with two RBIs as the Golden Bears improved to 14-3-1 this season.

Travis Coulter of the Cougars (13-6) went 2 for 3 and had an RBI triple in the fifth.

The teams continue their three-game series tonight at 5:30.
